I got into contradancing back in the early '70's, and started playing dance tunes on guitar (flat-picking). Switched to fiddle for something a little more portable. In the summer of 2009, I switched to viola. It's a challenge playing session tunes on viola, but I think it adds a nice dimension. I play most tunes by doubling them an octave below.
