I can often be seen busking in the West Midlands for cancer charities. I don't know how traditionalists would view my use of computer generated accompaniment but many appear to appreciate my efforts, and I still enjoy playing at real sessions. I am available as a solo performer in the UK West Midlands within a 40 Mile radius of Birmingham. Making use of self prepared accompaniment tracks I can provide live music for your event at an affordable price. If required I can play with a caller providing a complete barn dance. I have many years experience as a barn dance/ceilidh fiddler. My programme largely consists of lively Celtic/American dance music. Chiff and Fipple ITM Forum (Tutorials)
What makes the new forum special is that two very fine musicians, Peter Laban and Steven Jones (whom some of you might know as Brother Steve) have posted a number of transcription of recordings of great traditional Irish musicians. Mostly these recordings are private recordings done by Peter, or collected by him. You will find there transcriptions of tracks by Jimmy Donaghue, Tommy McCarthy (from the Sporting Nell CD), Joe Bane, Kieran Collins, and Willy Clancy himself. More transcriptions will follow. As you can see from this list of musicians, the emphasis is on "pure drop" and on stuff that is a bit older. It all grew out of the desire of some acolytes to get guidance that a bit more tangible than "well, you have to listen a lot to get it." Listen for what? Peter and Steven are great resourses for tips and hints, and both have posted comments to each transcription that discuss rhythm, timing, variations, ornamentation: all those subtle things that make a great performance. It is really a tremendous effort by Peter & Steve (and others who will put up their transcriptions in time or who have commented). I believe it is unique. The point of the transcriptions is not so much to make it easier to learn the tune, but rather to bring out what the player does with a specific tune, and why: to show the richness and subtlety of the Tradition.
