Alba Whistles
This website is the homepage of the most inovative, adventurous and not to mention crazy whistle maker, Stacey O'Gorman. Stacey started of as a goldsmith and then used her comprehensive knowledge of metals to make, in my opinion, the best whistles in the world. Her whistles are made of aluminium tubing and can be made in any key , with a tunning slide (aluminium) if required. Stacey has invetnted a number of whistles including the "Q1" which has taken the whistle world by storm, selling nearly a thousand whistles ,world-wide, in its first few months on the market. She also makes metal flutes ,which are just like a key-less wooden flute but made of aluminium ,and the "Highlander" range which are whistles made of a plastic called tufnol .Everyone of Stacey's whitles are individual because of the multi-resin fipple plugs which, I feel add generously to the overall beauty of the whistles. There is no doubt that these whistles will be the first choice whistle for the next generation of professional whiste players ,which they deserve to be .I think the best way to sum up Alba whistles is that they are original, funky and ornate whistles which sound like "Marilyn Monroe singing happy birthday to John F Kennedy" (Dale Wisely, Chiff and Fipple web-magazine)

Bows (and Lutes) By David Van Edwards
David Van Edwards is a specialist British maker of violin bows, especially baroque bows and transition bows (from the era between baroque and the modern bow design). Some trad fiddlers may be interested because Irish traditional fiddle music is descended from the baroque era when such bows were used. In fact, I've recently seen a very good Irish fiddler using a baroque bow, about which she was very enthusiastic.
Van Edward's website has excellent descriptions and photos of the bows in his catalogue, and some good technical comments on the types of wood and other materials that are used in the making of bows.
Other pages of his website are devoted mainly to the lutes he makes, not of direct interest to traditional Irish music per se, but may be of interest to fretted instrument players who might be involved in other musical genres.

Carey Parks Whistles
Maker of penny whistles and penny whistle accessories. Everyone who plays a Parks whistle is pleasantly surprised by the tone and responsiveness. Spending time backpacking and kayaking in the wilds of Florida, Parks wanted a quality instrument that could shake off exposure to salt water, sun and sand. So he made one. And another. And another. Working primarily in pvc and Delrin Parks whistles are building a reputation as a whistle that plays like a high-end whistle, but doesn't cost like one. Nor do they mind living in the door of your car or the bottom of your kayak. Oh, they like to live in your whistle roll or gig bag also! They are selling well to whistlers around the world and are turning up on stages and at sessions. Parks offers whistle cases and display racks as well as whistles.

Copeland Woodwinds
This is a link to what many consider one of the best sources for irish tin whistles, the copeland whistle made by Michael Copeland at his shop in Philadelphia, PA. Copeland makes whistles in a range of keys, all of which have a conical bore and are tunable. Brass is the standard material for these whistles, but some can be made of nickel upon request. Not surprisingly, these instruments are not cheap and the amount of time to receive an order has been known to be very long, especially for the coveted low D. Nevertheless, for the serious tin whistle player these instruments are well worth the investment in time and money.

Darius "Un-repentant" Bartlett and Rob "Metloef" Forkner Percussion Instruments
After several years researching the instrument, focusing primarily on rawhide chemistry and historic tannery practices, Darius has returned to production with a new approach to quality and affordable instruments. Basically it is time to make a high quality, affordable, entry level drum as well as full on custom building and keep the music and the musicians as the guiding force. Sharing this approach is Rob Forkner, Metloef Drums, who is now based in Europe and both he and Darius aim to set a few new bench marks. A musician wanting a custom built instrument should be able to have a sound dialogue with the maker and several chances to get the drum that he wants, so it's a three goes before despair regime. Also the decision to replace heads that fail due to faults within the skin in the first five years is now the norm. The first trials of the drums suggests that even the entry level drums are capable of out performing drums costing a €100 plus more, and the top of the line are still cheaper than those "top end of your money" fancy jobs! Given the new marketing approaches and the design changes attempted by some makers all instruments will be guaranteed to be genuine bodhrans and will be able to be played in all Irish competitions.
A new approach to those wanting to build their own instruments has seen Rob and Darius put Archangel Drumheads on the map. This part of the workshop will collaborate with those enthusiastic enough to want to build their own drum, to make sure that all the materials and support are there at, again, a reasonable price. Now your not going to get a Pakistani heads or Indian tuners so that will cost you more than $10, but you will be getting the best quality materials in the market and your drum will certainly be a top performer.
Early days for a new web site but the link and email will give you an idea about the difference between Cereal Box Bodhrans and the Real,Right, Thing.

Fife And Drum
I've posted this site for anyone interested in finding out more about the wonderful instrument, The Fife, in Co. Antrim.
If you visit John's very useful site you can join the 'Board' and find out from the local experts about this instrument and it's music.
John has a wonderful CD with examples of nearly 70 of these great tunes, played brilliantly by a mysterious Whistler(?) and if you talk nicely to him, you may be able to bribe a copy from him.
I can assure you the trouble will prove very worthwhile as these are great tunes which should be more widely played throughout this great wee island.
Oh yes, & you can also find out about that mighty beast 'The Lambeg' while you are at it.
For recordings worth listening to, to hear these tunes being played, check out any recordings by Harry Bradley ( essential listening for one and all!! ), John Kennedy's 'The Girls along the road', 'Music for Peace' by Frankie Gavin, Gary Hastings & Carl Hessien & of course Gary's excellent bokk, & CD, 'with Fife and Drum'

Good source for antique flutes and flute cases. If you have a flute that doesn't have a good strong case, check their custom-fitted plastic, foam-padded cases. The price and quality are hard to beat (case looks like what you get when you buy an expensive microphone). Check also their restoration work, in case you have a damaged instrument.

Gruven Music
Sam Grubb's Gruven Music website -- home of the most practical, safe, and functional musical instrument stands on today's market, made in the U.S., in Elk City, Oklahoma. More guitar show exhibitors use Gruven stands than all other stands combined. I own two of Sam's fiddle stands and love them -- I even give them as presents to other fiddlers. Much safer than just leaving your fiddle on your chair or on the table.
If you've a special request for a stand, let Sam know -- I asked for my stands to be sized for leaving my shoulder rest on the fiddle (I think Sam's made that a regular feature of the fiddle stands now).

Hohner SqueezePad Apps For IPad, IPhone, And IPod Touch
Hohner announces the introduction of a revolutionary new app for the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch: the Hohner SqueezeBox.
Mimicking the layout of Hohner’s iconic Corona Classic diatonic accordion, this intuitive virtual accordion app features a super responsive, three-row fingerboard that plays and sounds like the traditional instrument.
The Hohner SqueezeBox allows musicians to practice chord combinations, scales, and songs on-the-go in five different key combinations and colors.
Headphones can be used for private practice or, the audio output of the virtual accordion can be amplified by plugging into computer speakers or other sound enhancing devices.
Players have the option to display the note names on the large white simulated pearloid buttons and with the touch of a button, the tonality can easily be changed from wet tuning for a more animated sound, to dry tuning.

Ifshin Violins (Jay Haide)
I was loaned a fiddle made by Jay Haide a couple of days ago while my own fiddle is undergoing repairs. The fiddle loaned to me by my local fiddle dealer/repairer is brand new and I'm the first to play it. I am being encouraged to give it a good work-out to play it in. Even with this new instrument, which, as with all new instruments, demands playing in, I am very impressed with the responsiveness and tone over its range, and with the standard of workmanship and materials put into and I would seriously consider buying it as my second (or even first!) fiddle.
I had a look at Ifshin's site, and, apart from their advertising, there is a lot of useful advice on upkeep of instruments and selection of strings.

MK Whistles
MK Music was founded by Misha Somerville in 2000 with the aim of creating the world's finest whistles.
Working from a workshop by Loch Ness, Scotland in between performing with Scottish Fusion Band Croft No. Five it took almost 2 years to design a prototype for a Low D Whistle of high quality on which other MK whistles would be based.
Since its conception Mk Music has maintained an innovative and fresh approach to the design and making of musical instruments.
Since the first MK whistle rolled out the factory (we're keeping that one to ourselves!) the design has evolved to give you the most ergonomic and amongst the best playing whistle available. Road tested by professionals
A total of 9 aluminium parts and 2 brass parts go into the making of each instrument.
Mk whistles have a parallel bore with a slight contraction towards the mouthpiece.
The windway itself is curved and tapered and the walls around the fipple window are heightened by the thickness of the material - contributing to the control of the airflow and therefore the tone.
All mk whistles are fitted with a brass tuning slide which is made extremely accurately for a smooth fit.
The body of mk whistles is made of aluminium. Although not strictly true the lighter the material the better its acoustic properties. This explains the popularity of wood in instrument making generally. Aluminium is light but also allows amazingly accurate parts to be produced and is therefore the preferred material for many of the worlds best whistle makers. Brass is used for the tuning slide because it is hard and inert. Oxidation of the surface of some metals causes slides to jam with fine particles. Brass does not react in this way and is also relatively hard meaning it lasts longer and it can take the odd knock a bit better.

Olympia Dulcimer Company
Featuring the Walkabout Dulcimer. An interesting instrument: a mountain dulcimer you can play like a guitar. Kinda looks like a bouzouki if you squint. It’s a diatonic instrument (like a tin whistle) so there are no wrong notes, theoretically. A nice beginner’s instrument, it’s great for playing tunes in an intimate setting. Not a ton of volume, which for the purists is maybe best. Great for mixing melody and chords. Forgive the cheesy, breezy tone of the website. The instruments are actually very well made.

Paul Bradley Violins
Paul Bradley was born in Bessbrook, County Armagh. His formative years of playing were inspired by his older brother Joe, who plays fiddle, concertina, and tin-whistle, and his brother Dominic, who also plays fiddle. Indeed his whole family has leanings toward music, with his oldest brother, Pat, being an excellent singer and accordionist. His two sisters, Bernie and Geraldine, are also fine singers of songs in both Irish and English, and his brother Laurence has been known to play a tune on the banjo occasionally.
Apart from the immediate influence of the music in his own family, Paul was also a pupil of the renowned fiddler and composer Josephine Keegan. Josephine's friendship, her love of the music, and the many people she had come to know through music over the years inspired Paul to walk further along that avenue. Later, fiddlers such as Ben Gunne, Martin McGinley, Brian Sutherland, and the many other great fiddlers who Paul was to encounter in Belfast had a lasting effect on his playing. All of these players had a strong northern style, which was often informed by the playing styles of other regions.
It was in Belfast where he recorded his first solo album "Atlantic Roar" on the Outlet record label. This album received a five-star review in the Irish Times from musician, critic and author Fintan Vallely. Paul has managed and played with the well-known Irish Traditional Music group Dorsa (previously na Dorsa). The group toured the USA and Europe regularly, and formed part of Ireland's musical representation at EXPO 2000 in Hanover.
Paul Bradley trained as a violin-maker and repairer at The Newark School of Violin-Making, England, where he studied violin-making, cello-making and viola-making under Paul Bowers, Patrick Jowett, Bharat Kandekar and Paul Harrild. He also studied repair work extensively. Since he received his diploma from Newark he has been working full time in Galway as a maker and repairer.

Puny Tunes "the wee whistle"
The Puny Tune is a small four-holed musical instrument that was first designed in 1978 by Bryan Mumford, and has been granted a U.S. patent. It is a modern variation of the ancient instruments known as globular or vessel flutes, which were the ritual clay whistles found in the ruins of pre-Columbian Central and South America.
Puny Tunes have a unique fingering system, which is capable of producing an accurate thirteen note chromatic octave with only four fingerholes. Nominally pitched in the key of C, they are handcrafted from an engineered wood composite called DymondWood®, and each comes with a lanyard, playing guide and protective case.
Simple to learn yet offering amazing musical possibilities, the pocket-sized Puny Tune is one of the world's most portable wind instruments.

Ive bought two from Santiago & Star. The have 3 models. My teacher thought I got a good deal on both violins. My second purchase was a Concert Model Art series, the top of their line. I think it will definitely improve my playing. The back is stunning, the sound outstanding and it is an excellent product. Joseph is honest, informative and makes the transaction about as easy as it can be. I highly recommend Santiago & Star Violins. Be sure to look at the Photo Gallery
