Celebrate midwinter with one of the great treasures of Canadian traditional music!
GILLES LOSIER & friends present a concert of music from Scotland, Acadia, Ireland and Québec on Friday, February 1at 8pm, at St. Matthias’ Church, 10 Church Hill Avenue, Westmount (corner of Church Hill and Cote St. Antoine, close to and behind Westmount city hall). Tickets are $15.00, $10.00 for seniors & students, available at the door.
Gilles Losier’s playing should be familiar to anyone who has taken even a passing interest in Canadian folk music over the last forty years. He was pianist and arranger to the great Québecois fiddler Jean Carignan, and his violin, piano, and bass can be heard on dozens of recordings by Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Boys of the Lough, and many others. Those who grew up on NFB shorts on the CBC will have heard Gilles as the fiddling bear in the Blackfly Song animated short!
Acadian by birth, Gilles Losier grew up immersed in the traditional music of the region. This oral tradition, plus classical training acquired at schools for the blind in Montreal and Halifax, combined to produce a musician who possesses both deep roots and great sophistication.
For this concert, various friends from the Montreal traditional music community will join Gilles, for a programme of songs and instrumental pieces from the wonderful mosaic of Canadian traditional music: music from Acadia, Scotland, Quebec, Ireland, and Cape Breton. Guests will include Mary Calder (vocals); Ken MacKenzie (bagpipes, whistles); Susan Palmer (Celtic harp); Bob Cussen (mandolin); Jim McDermott (concertinas, whistles) and Patrick Hutchinson (guitars, vocals).

Né en l’Acadie, Gilles Losier a grandit entouré par la culture vivante de sa région. Cette tradition orale, avec la fondation classique qu’il a reçue dans les écoles pour les aveugles à Halifax et à Montréal, a contribué à former un musicien sophistiqué aux racines profondes. Il s’est produit sur scène de Carnegie Hall jusqu’aux Iles Shetland (notamment dans son rôle d’accompagnateur du maître-violoneux Québécois Ti-Jean Carignan) et sur des nombreux disques (notamment celles de Kate & Anna McGarrigle et de Boys of the Lough, entres plusieurs d’autres.)
Pour cet évènement, plusieurs ami(e)s de la scène musicale traditionnelle de Montréal accompagneront Gilles, dans un programme de chansons et pièces instrumentales venant de l’Acadie, de l’Écosse, du Québec, d’Irlande, et du Cap-Breton.
