The United Irish of Dayton, in partnership with the University of Dayton’s Continuing Education Department, announce the Dayton Irish Arts Institute which will present Celtic workshops from Tuesday, July 25, through Thursday, July 27, prior to the fifth annual Dayton Celtic Festival. University of Dayton will host the workshops on its campus.
The purpose of the workshops is to provide Daytonians with high quality Irish cultural instruction in an effort to increase and strengthen Irish traditions in the Miami Valley. The breadth of instruction includes courses in music, arts and crafts, language and dance. The workshops will be comprised of both group and individual sessions, with instruction being primarily in the evening. Individual instruction will occur in the afternoon, and group music sessions will follow at the end of the evening.
Irish music instruction will cover various traditional instruments like the Fiddle, Bodhran, Flute, Bouzouki, Button Accordion, Uilleann Pipes and Vocal Singing. Two bands, Teada and Oisre, will provide the musical instruction. Teada is based in Ireland and has been a headliner band at the Dayton Celtic Festival in previous years. Oisre is a regional band from Columbus.
The arts and crafts workshops will cover pottery and Celtic jewelry making. Joe and Sandy Wahler from County Mayo, Ireland, who are owners of Greenman Pottery, will be the instructors for the pottery classes. Sam Vacco, owner of the Sterling Studio on East Fifth St. in the Oregon District will instruct students in the creation of a piece of Celtic jewelry.
Ron Crow, a leading regional language instructor who has taught Irish language for over 20 years and authored two Irish language textbooks, will conduct the Irish language workshops. Crow is also a charter member of the North American Association of Celtic Language Teachers and co-founder of the Gaelic League of Central Ohio.
Cathal Liam, a prominent Irish historian will also be on hand to present information on the Irish Civil War, 1916 to 1921. Cathal Liam writes short stories, poems and Irish editorial commentary for publications in the United States and Ireland. A compelling speaker, he has appeared before numerous bookstore, library, university classroom and Irish cultural & music festival audiences throughout the United States, chronicling Ireland’s infamous ‘Troubles.’ Presently living in Cincinnati, Ohio, he continually returns to Ireland, renewing old friendships and researching new material.
In addition, several instructors from local Dayton area Irish dance schools will provide lessons on individual and group ceili dance steps. For more information on any of the workshops, please contact Kevin Graham at 937-864-2641.
