Hi everyone,
a friend told me that a wonderful-great-big festival was to take place in County Kerry, in the beginning of August...with Lunasa, and Flook (among others) performing...
The only piece of information I found on the web about that fleagh was the town, Ballybunion...
Has anyone heard about it and knows more than I do???
This World Fleadh seems to me mostly what I'd call 'trendy trad', there are very few of the really good solo performers and some of the best bands are missing too, no Dervish or Altan. Most significantly some of the headline acts mostly have nothing to do with traditional Irish music. Aslan, Gypsy Kings, Waterboys, John Spillane etc.what the hell have they got to do with traditional Irish music aside from Steve Wickham's fiddle?!!
For those of you who prefer spare soulful traditional music to trendy trad, why not check out the Masters of Tradition Festival in Bantry, Cork which is on around the same time 16th-20th August.
Lots of great artists and surprise guests including Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, Matt Molloy, John Carty, Steve Cooney, Jackie Daly, Ronan Browne, Peadar O'Loughlin, Gerry 'Banjo' Ó'Connor, Karan Casey, Iarla Ó'Lionaird etc.
I was at this festival last year and the concerts were truly magic. Sessions were a bit thin on the ground though so it'd be nice if some session.orgers came along for some tunes in between concerts.
I'm afraid I get all sorts of allergic reactions when I hear Lúnasa, I sneeze, cough, come out in hives etc. etc! They are all great musicians, no doubt about that, but the music they make is just not my cup of tea, I'm far from being a purist but Lúnasa just don't do it for me, neither do most of the acts appearing at the World Fleadh.
Sorry if i seem like a stick in the mud, but to me it's just a big overhyped commercial event with very little substance. The biggest sham of all is that apart from the fact that very few of the great soloists/duets appear to be playing, the best trad group by a mile 'Dervish' aren't playing!
Overall I think the idea of creating a big Celtic Connections type festival in Ireland is great but perhaps more thought should be put into the artists that are playing, it is way too biased towards trendy trad in my opinion and for that reason I won't be going, not just because of the concert line-up but also because I can anticipate that most of the sessions will be dominated by Lúnasa loving types who only seem to play bland 'happy' tunes, with trendy syncopations, trendy backing and trendy major keys. Give me the dark, modal, soulful stuff any day!

Re: THE WORLD FLEADH
Solas, Lunasa and Alison Brown are not to be sneezed at. However un-trad they may be, they're still wonderful musicians and fun to listen to.
