Regarded by many as one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music, Martin Hayes is the recipient of major national and international awards: most recently TG4's prestigious Gradam Ceoil, Musician of the Year 2008. He has recorded two acclaimed solo albums, “Martin Hayes” (1993) and “Under the Moon” (1995) on the Green Linnet label. Martin Hayes is the Artistic Director of the Masters of Tradition Festival held in August each year at Bantry House in Bantry, West Cork, where Ireland’s most distinguished traditional musicians are invited to play in an exquisite chamber music setting.
A native of County Clare, to which he returns for extended periods several times a year, Martin Hayes has been based in the United States, now living in Connecticut, for the past twenty-three years. but remains grounded in the music he grew up with in his own locality, Maghera, Feakle, East County Clare where the music which he learned from his late father, P. Joe Hayes, the legendary leader of the long-lived Tulla Ceili Band, profoundly influenced his musical accent and ideas forever after.
Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, a native of Chicago born to parents from the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. He studied at the city’s prestigious Music College before becoming an active member of the local music scene. Cahill’s spare, essential accompaniment to Martin Hayes’ fiddle is acknowledged as a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. In addition to his work with Martin, Dennis has performed with such renowned fiddlers as Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers and Kevin Burke, as well as many Irish musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. .
Mary MacNamara, a native of Tulla, and like Martin was also brought up in a family steeped in traditional music. She played duets with Martin for many years. She has a beautiful, graceful, relaxed style of playing that can only be attained by years of listening, practicing and honing to perfection. She has won a number of all Ireland competitions both as a soloist (concertina) and in duet with Martin Hayes and has toured extensively in Europe and the U.S.A. No collection of Irish music should be without her 2 albums "Mary MacNamara" and "The Blackberry Blossom” as well as her recent album she made with her brother Andrew “Open Hearth”. This CD is based on the music they first heard as children from Joe Bane and Bill Malley who were friends of their father. The music epitomises the East Clare style of playing and is a must have for anyones collection.
Helen Hayes, like her brother Martin, was immersed in the music of east Clare all her life, thanks to their late father, PJ Hayes - a well-known fiddler from the locality, . and was one of the founders of The Tulla Ceili Band back in 1948.
She began singing in her teenage years and soon afterwards, the Tulla Band needed a singer. This was the opportunity that forced her to learn more songs and take her singing more seriously. In 2008 she released her debut solo album ‘Today, Tomorrow & on Sunday’, in which she dedicates it to her father, family and the music of East Clare.
Lena Ullman was introduced to the five-string banjo and American old-time music as a teenager in Sweden. Living in Ireland since the late-70's, she played clawhammer style with The Higglers, an old-time stringband which performed throughout Ireland and Europe. Later she applied the clawhammer banjo style to traditional Irish music and began to compose original music on the instrument. She now sings and plays in Moonshine, with Frank Hall and Johnny Moynihan. She is currently producing a CD of her original music.
