"Technical brilliance, a flamboyant style and a versatility that seems to encompass every form of traditional music of countless countries, as well as classical music, mark out Máirtín O'Connor as a squeeze box player in the very top echelon."
Máirtín O'Connor began playing the accordion at the age of nine, and without question is considered as one of the finest musician ever to emerge from these shores. His remarkable career has seen him as a member of many of traditional music's leading groups including, Dé Dannan, The Boys of the Lough, and Skylark. His first solo album 'A Connachtman's Rambles' established him as a solo musician and proved a major critical success, which was follwed by several other recordings including the critically acclaimed ‘The road West” – a must for any enthusiast of irish music. As a soloist he has performed with the RTE Concert Orchestra on Bill Whelan's Seville Suite and in 1995 he played a major role in Bill's world renowned 'Riverdance'.
Together Liz and Yvonne Kane create a highly exciting and vibrant sound. These sisters come from Dawros on the outskirts of Letterfrack. Along with the recordings of the Rainey brothers, their grandfather and Mary were an early influence on their music. The Rainey’s were travelling fiddle players who visited Letterfrack and the surrounding areas in the 1950s.
Yvonne and Liz consider their style to be heavily influenced by South Sligo fiddle playing, the music of East Galway and in particular the fiddle playing and compositions of Paddy Fahey. In recent years, the sisters have been privileged to meet and play with Paddy whose music plays a central role in their repertoire.
They released their first album together 'The Well-Tempered Bow' in May 2002. The girls have also recorded and toured with their formr house mate Sharon Shannon. Know as the Wood Choppers they . For the next three years, the band took them all over the world to promote the release of the album 'The Diamond Mountain Sessions'.
Steve Cooney was born in Melbourne , Australia . He started his professional musical career at the age of 17, playing for a while in the US before returning home, where he was in a number of rock bands, (Bushwackers, Fruitcake) and the successful folk/rock band, Red Gum. He bought a one-way ticket to Ireland, where his ancestors are from . He busked and worked odd jobs for a few months, before joining “Stockton's Wing” as bassist. Since then he has been associated with many projects, with a major contribution to Sharon Shannon's first album, and performances and recordings with Dermot Byrne, Altan, Martin Hayes and others. While the guitar, and rock guitarists have raised eyebrows in trad Irish music in the past, Cooney is no noise machine. His technique is excellent, and his understanding of traditional music and accompaniment has been proven by the number of contributions he has made to traditional groups and albums.
While growing up in an Spidéal, Áine Ní Dhroighneáin was surrounded by many fine singers including Síle Tim Ní Fhlaithearta, Mairéad Ní Fhlaithearta, and Tomás Ó Neachtain. Her interest in the tradition started. Aged eight she started attending singing classes at An Gaelcadamh, Her first Oireachtas was at the tender age of fifteen, where she went on to win the Corn Faoi-18.
Although Áine has yet to make a full recording of her songs, she is highly regarded in sean-nós circles. She has contributed to many of TG4’s music programmes including Abair Amhrán. Also, as an actor, you would see her regularly on popular programmes including Ros na Rún, and Rásaí na Gaillimhe. Her most recent project is ‘Burn the Red Lamp’ – A theatrical piece combining both puppets and real actors. This is an adaptation from a short story by Kevin Barry, which will be part of Galway’s prestigious Cúirt Festival programme this year.
