An extravaganza of Irish comedy interwoven with a trad. music session featuring some of London’s great traditional Irish musicians. Add to this free ham sandwiches, a raffle (prizes include a phone call home to yer mammy) the monthly confession box (absolving guilt by announcing punters’ sins drawn from a hat) and you’ve an evening you’d want to be mad to miss.
The evening will make the most of what it means to be Irish (or what it means to be just plain magnificent) in the capital today; an idea that has already gained the attention of an ever-growing Facebook community.
The launch of The Magnificent Session takes place on March 7th and features Andrew Maxwell celebrity headliner/compere of King Of Comedy (C4), Mock The Week (BBC) and The Panel (RTE) fame. We will also be joined by Hackney Empire Comedy Award winner 2010, Rob Broderick and comedienne extraordinaire Grainne Maguire.
London born singer and fiddle player Carmen Phelan has toured the world with many household names; she has recently performed at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic, Celtic Connections, Vicar Street and the Royal Festival Hall. She performs at The Magnificent Session with the specially formed ‘The Culchies’ playing upbeat, fiddle-led trad with a few Steve Earle and Tom Waits tunes thrown in for good measure (make it a large one). You’d do well to pace yourself for a dance later on in the evening, and where better to hold this kind of shindig, than the legendary Boogaloo which has recently hosted the likes of Nick Cave, Sharon Shannon, Pete Doherty, Shane MacGowan and The Pogues but to name a few.
