Borne out of a lifelong shared passion for traditional music and traditional song, three friends set about organising an event to celebrate the two related genres. Wexford is internationally renowned for it's Opera Festival, attracting artistes and visitors from far a field, yet every week of the year there are many local singers and musicians entertaining people in all sorts of intimate venues. The Wexford Pipe and Song weekend will give an opportunity for the extremely talented local traditional singers and musicians to share the stage with musicians and singers from Ireland, Scotland and Spain.
Singer Tim Lyons and Piper Extraordinaire Fred Morrison will open the weekend on Friday night at Wexford Arts Centre. Tim, a Galway-based Cork native, is an extremely talented and funny singer/songwriter. He is well known for his time with De Dannan (1978) and the Big Guns and Hairy Drums album recorded with Fintan Vallely. His songs feature satirical lyrics of the modern time about everything from hamburgers, murder, sex and religion to Ben Dunne and Willie McBride, and everybody's scapegoat, that shockingly authentic icon of 'roots' music - the Bodhrán.
Scots Piper Fred Morrison will headline the opening concert on Friday December 1 st. Fred's dazzling performances on the highland pipes, border pipes, uilleann pipes and low whistle have established him as one of Scotland's most unique and powerful artists. Often referred to as 'The King of the Pipes', he is an extremely versatile musician with a career which has included Gold Medals in the world's top piping competitions, performances with Dick Gaughan and Capercaillie and three highly acclaimed solo albums.
Saturday night's concert will feature the Asturian folk group (and family) Tejedor is composed of José Manuel (Asturian bagpipes, low whistle, flute), Javier (button accordion, gaita, flutes) and Eve Tejedor (traditional percussion and vocals). José Manuel is generally accepted as the most elegant and talented piper in the Spanish folk scene. Eva, for her part, is an exceptional singer and percussionist. Tejedor will be joined by special guest, guitarist Paul Meehan, from Co. Armagh. Paul has recorded albums as a member of North Cregg and Lunasa and is known for his uniquely subtle yet powerful guitar accompaniment. Tejedor will follow acclaimed singer Niamh Parsons on the Wexford Arts Centre Stage, who has come to be known as one of the most distinctive voices in Irish Music. Niamh will be accompanied by Ennis-based guitarist Graham Dunne; there is a spiritual bond when these two perform together, which draws out the essence of the songs
The weekend will also include talks, demonstrations and traditional music sessions in many local pubs and hotels which will include local musicians and singers accompanied by the visiting musicians. Local artistes will include Paddy Berry, Brendan Wickham, Darina Gleeson, Ned & Dermot Wall, John McMahon, Ritchie Sinnot, John Morrissey and many, many more.
Funding for the event has been sourced from The Arts Council, Wexford Arts Centre, EPA and also from local businesses including; Bawn Developments, Riverbank House Hotel and South 51 Cafe Bar. A full programme of events can be obtained from Wexford Arts Centre (and is attached to the message) and bookings for the events are now being taken at the Arts Centre on 0539123764.
