Mick Gavin’s annual Crossroads Ceili at the Ark is a great way to mark the turning of the year. A gathering of local Irish singers, musicians and dancers, all sharing the stage with a nationally known headliner. This years ceili will feature the popular Cork singer, and winner of the 2001 Thomas Moore Cup for solo Irish tenor. Paddy Homan, traditional Irish singer from Cork whose powerful voice has been the talk of Chicago's Irish scene. The bard of Cork and the River Lee is now the bard of Chicago and Lake Michigan! Paddy will be joined by Belfast balladeer Wallace Hood formerly of “The Irish Rovers“. The evening will also feature 3 time all-Ireland gold medal harpist Siobhan McKinney; Ann Arbor natives, harpist Jamie Lutz and fiddler Kelsey Lutz who is a two-time All-Ireland silver medal winner in trio and group and recently featured on the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann website direct from the Fleadh in Tullamore. Also performing will be County Clare fiddler Mick Gavin, Sean Gavin (uillean pipes, flute ) just back from a European tour with the new hit show “Celtic Legends”; multi-instrumentalist Michael Gavin (banjo, guitar and fiddle); Colleen Shanks, silver medalist in group on flute and whistles; dancer and fiddler Holland Raper silver medalist in trio and winner of the 2007 and 2008 Michael Flatley Award ; Ray Maguire, formerly of “Pat’s People”; dancers from the Heinzman school of dance; Michigan’s favorite son, traditional dancer Nic Gareiss, ("Nic Gareiss is one of the few artists in the world of traditional dance whose practice transcends the language we shackle our creative expression with. I have seen his enthusiasm, supreme technical ability and creative flair engaging movement and sound traditions from around the globe with respect and an incredible thirst for knowledge. Such knowledge is used to inform his own unique artistic practice which has the freshness, purity and vision of a tradition borne anew. The earthquake caused by Nic's feet will still shake the worlds of dance long after he has hung up his dancing shoes. We can only take joy in the fact that he has just put them on." - Niall Keegan, Director, MA Irish Music Performance, University of Limerick, Ireland)..
This year’s ceili will also feature special guest Kimberly Mikulski co-founder, principle instructor and choreographer of Ealaín Céime Irish Dance School in Rochester Hills. Kimberly began her pursuit of Irish Dance in 1996 at the Glendarragh Academy of Irish Dance. She has won numerous 1st place medals in various competitions and proudly performed with the Academy's dance troupe. In 2005, she founded Scoil Rince Mikulski Irish Dance School in Nottingham, England - a school which continues to flourish to this day.
Workshops (fiddle, flute, tenor banjo, penny whistle, uilleann pipes, guitar accompaniment, button accordion, and mandolin) will be offered by advance registration only on Saturday afternoon. Call (313) 537-3489 for further information and to register. The Ark is located at 316 S. Main, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Office: (734) 761-1800; Hotline: (734) 761-1451.
I heard that there's a discount on food at Conor O'Neils next door, and there's usually an impromptu session after the show. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. . .
