The Kilcar Fleadh commences this Saturday, 9th August and runs until Sunday 17th. The opening event of the Fleadh is the ‘Ceol na gConallach’ concert at 8.00pm in the Parish Hall featuring Johnny and Francie Byrne (Coguish) and Noreen Lyons; Donna Harkin, Jim Byrne and Fiona Heywood; and the legendary Glencolmcille fiddle player James Byrne and his family.
On Sunday night the concert takes place in the Áislann and features: Buncrana based accordion and harmonica player Tom Byrne accompanied by fellow Inishowen musicians Michael Gallinagh and Michael Carey. Also performing at the Sunday night concert are top local fiddlers Stephen and Claire Gallagher and Treasa Lavell from Co. Mayo. To avoid disappointment everyone wishing to attend this concert is advised to arrive early.
Two other concerts will also take place in the Parish Hall during the Fleadh: on Wedesday evening a concert featuring two fine young groups from the area: The Reel Deal (Aisling and Seana Byrne, Christine McGinley and Aisling Curran) and Ellie, Lucy, Catherine McGinley, Eilis McLaughlin and Roisín Byrne. On Saturday 16th some of the country’s finest traditional entertainers perform at the final concert of the Fleadh including Laoise Kelly (harp), Martin McGiley (fiddle), Matt McGranaghan (fiddle) and Patricia Flynn (songs).
The Kilcar Pipe Band will perform will perform on the Main Street after Mass (approx. 12.30 pm) on Sunday, 10th and on Friday evening 15th August at 8.30.
There will be a book launce ‘Ón tSeanam Anall – Scéalta Mhicí Bhán Uí Bheirn’ in Áislann Chill Chartha on Monday evening at seven o’clock followed at 8.00pm by an illustrated lecture by Mick Brown on Francie Dearg and Micí Bán.
On Thursday evening at seven o’clock there will be a lecture in Áislann Chill Chartha by Ronan Galvin on local music traditions. This will be followed at 8.30 pm by ‘Echoes in the Glen’ where musicians will perform on both sides of Gleann a’Bhaile Dubh.
On Friday night at 9.30 another old tradition will be revived when a ‘Big Night’ will be held in the Parish Hall. Aidan and Kevin O’Donnell and Martin Wilson will perform and Clement Gallagher will be present to call the dances but any musicians and singers present will also be welcome to take part.
Workshops
A programme of workshops has been arranged commencing on Monday, 11th. Registration takes place in the Parish Hall on Monday morning from 11.00 am to 1.45 pm. Ten leading tutors have been engaged for the week. Workshops will be available in the following: Fiddle, Accordion, Tin Whistle, Guitar, Singing and Dancing. The tutors are: Fiddle – Peter Carr, Claire Gallagher, Mick Brown and Ronan Galvin; Accordion – Donna Harkin; Tim Whistle – Aoife Feeney; Guitar – Derek Williamson; Singing – Patricia Flynn; Dancing – Clement Gallagher.
There will be street sessions during the Fleadh and the pubs have also booked a full programme of traditional music for the nine days.
