Two of the world’s finest musicians will appear at the Roscommon Arts Centre on Thursday November 8: the concert is one of eleven in Ireland and part of a thirty-eight date autumn tour that also brings them to the UK, France and the USA. The partnership of Ireland’s most innovative harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh and England’s premier flatpicking guitarist, Chris Newman, has that rare ability to combine true virtuosity with spellbinding entertainment, weaving a tapestry of gorgeous music that will warm and delight on the coldest of nights. Everything from Irish dance music to bluegrass, O'Carolan to hot jazz and a sprinkling of songs and new compositions, all performed with panache, empathy and dry humour.
They recently released their sixth CD, FireWire, twenty years after their first ground-breaking recording. The Daily Telegraph marveled at its “Dazzling virtuosity” and The Irish Times said that it “Takes one of the most effete instruments in traditional music by the scruff of the neck and breathes a fire into its belly".
Cork-woman Máire is famed for being the first person to play traditional Irish dance music on the harp in a stylistically accurate way and in 2001 was honoured by Irish music's most prestigious award, that of Traditional Musician of the Year - Gradam Cheoil TG4. Chris is one of the UK’s most influential acoustic guitarists, whose astonishing virtuosity fizzes with a creative energy that takes the breath away.
A highly original sound and mix of music guarantee a captivating evening from this truly unique duo.
