Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2006

So who all here is going? I'm finally making the trip after years of competing here in the states... I'll be playing in the under 18 fiddle competition. It'll also be my first time ever in Ireland, and I'm very excited! Hope to meet and here some of you play. :)

Hahaha, sorry... I meant to say that I hope to HEAR some of you play (for the spelling police. ;) )

Won't make it this year- best of luck to you though! Hope you do well and have a great time.

Re: Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2006

I've got a couple of friends who will be competing in the fiddle competition there, but I am sad to say that I probably won't get to go! It's probably pretty darn expensive to fly there from the US. Hey, speaking of that, do you mind letting me in on how much it will cost you? Since I don't really know, I've just heard that it's pricey.

Good luck while your there!

PS. Does anyone know about how many fiddlers enter the competition? I always wondered...

Re: Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2006

Well, I'll be there with my girlfriend. Hope to compete in Tenor Banjo for over 21. Be sure to check you out and hear you play. Good luck (in advance).

Re: Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2006

I'm gutted to be on tour when the Fleadh's on this year, otherwise I'd be failing miserably in the fiddle competition ;) Have a few tunes for all the absentees though!

Re: Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2006

Will anybody be there for the Éigse week in the lead up to the Fleadh? I find the sessions to be a lot better during this week before the multitudes arrive!

Letterkenny Fleadh 2006

Hi
Anyone going to the All Ireland Fleadh this year ?

Any advice on good pubs/pubs to avoid, where to find a quiet tune ?

Any advice on what its like in the lead-up ( during Scoil Eigse ? ). Perhaps its better to go then, before it gets "mad" ?

Thanks
Pat

Re: Letterkenny Fleadh 2006

I remember last year Dillons was pretty good.

Re: Letterkenny Fleadh 2006

I'd love to go but it all depends on whether I get through. If I don't then I don't think I could persuade my Dad to bring me.

Re: Letterkenny Fleadh 2006

Pat - a few of us County Down ones will be about. There is a wee pub way past the end of the town called [appropriately] The Hideout which is worth trying.

Contact me nearer the time and maybe we can get together for a few tunes.

Re: Letterkenny Fleadh 2006

Oh my God, the Hideout, Im sorry but when I lived in Letterkenny I was always told only to go there if I ever wanted a slap with a pool que, no that wasn't aimed specifically at me either!

The hideout

breandan
Thanks for the tip re the hideout.

Bannerman, I'am wondering if I should rock up there during the week before ? Anyone got experience of what the sessions are like during Scoil Eigse ?

Thanks
Pat

Fléadh in Letterkenny? Do you know it?

I just read their webpages, and since I`m already in the area from the 26th I thought it could be a good idea to join the festival as an audience, but to be honest I don`t really understand what kind of a festival this is. It sounds like the main thing is competitions, and that this is what it`s really about. But is it possibile to come and just being an audience? Are there concerts and session?
I think it looks like the word cheili is mentioned alot. Is there alot of ceilimusic every evening instead of "normal" ITM?
And what does this mean:
1.Gig-rig
2.Fíor-chéilí
3.Aprés fleadh (I know that aprés means after in french...So does it mean that everybody are cleaning up now for the next three days...or does it mean that now is alle the fun (sessions) beginning?

Re: Fléadh in Letterkenny? Do you know it?

A gig rig is a truck with a stage for performers ...a sort of mobile concert stage which is located in a public place for free concerts.
I havent a clue what a fior ceili is ( and I've been going to fleadhs for more than 30 years!)
Apres fleadh is when the crowds are gone and the musicians have sessions in quiet pubs. This is when the best music can be heard.
