Val Doonican

Your chance to see the legendary Val, the great sixties and seventies exponent of classic hits such as Delaney's Donkey, O' Rafferty's Motor Car, Paddy McGinty's Goat and The Agricultural Irish Girl. How could you possibly miss it?
Well, possibly you might if you're working, as the show starts at 2.00pm, presumably to attract as many over-65's as possible, whom I presume would be his target audience these days (if not always.)

Major hit left out!

Key Lad,you have left out an important song about a pig which Featured in Val`s Oirish Trilogy of Donkey, goat and pig songs! What are you thinking of ,man?

Oh, so sorry - I don't know if I know the pig one - please remind me.

Years ago a mate of mine, knowing that I was mad into Irish trad music, bought me a Val Doonican LP for my birthday. Taking the wee wee of course, so it was a bit of a laugh.
His joke backfired when I learned all the words of Delaneys Donkey and would, after a few pints on the way back from the boozer, thus regale him and our other drunken student mates with a rendition of said song, complete with actions. It's actually a good one. I've had a soft spot for Val ever since. And I know he is cheesey and twee and populist and blue rinse postmenopausal, but I don't care.

The pig

Hello again Key,I believe the pig in the song was also the property of O`Rafferty,a man about whom it is said Val had written a book.

Pig Book?

You wouldn't be thinking of Nelligan's Pig, would you? a children's book.

First few lines

"O`Rafferty`s pig was a wonderful animal,
Built like a battleship, sturdy and stout,
his manners they would have disgraced any cannibal,
ignorance written all over his snout..."
pretty impressive lyrics I think you`ll agree-pity i`ve forgotten the rest.
