An intimate alternative to the World Fleadh

This festival is about creating a quiet and intimate atmosphere in which Irish music can be performed in a good acoustic environment, and where listeners can appreciate the subtle details of the music.

Ireland enjoys a great richness of masters, who are however, often overlooked and sidelined by the current trends in Irish music. Masters of Tradition, spread over five days, will create a much-needed opportunity for the masters of the tradition to perform and be heard, the festival will be a unique occasion to hear master musicians perform in the intimate setting of Bantry House.

Celebrating the very roots of traditional music, this year’s Festival looks set to build on the resounding success of its last three years. The late night sessions will be a coming together of musical experience to explore the spirit of Traditional Music in Ireland in 2006. A cocktail of musicians, mixing unexpected guests and featured artists will be invited to play each evening by Ronan Browne, Matt Molloy, Jacky Daly and Steve Cooney.

The Festival will open with the world premiere of a new work composed by the young talented composer David Flynn for Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill with Ioana Petcu - Colan on violin. The line up for the following concerts is Matt Molloy, John Carty, Steve Cooney, Ronan Browne, Gerry O'Connor, Karan Casey, Jackie Daly and Iarla O'Lionaird.

"We're trying to avoid a commercial presentation, and give musicians a chance to go back into the roots of the music for a night. And I would include in that some other presentation for myself, something different from what I do with Dennis Cahill." - Martin Hayes

Martin Hayes is responding to a feeling expressed at the Willie Clancy Summer School: "The soul of the musician is being lost". He feels there is still time to save it. For the audience, the result will be an intimate and immediate musical experience. It will be entertainment, but not necessarily easy entertainment, as it may not be packaged or presented in the normal fashion.

Shameless plug I know but.....

Ok, I'm not just promoting this festival because Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill and Ioana Petcu-Colan are performing my music at the festival. I was at the festival last year and it was really unique.

If you are a fan of Martin and Dennis this festival is unmissable, they play a lot during the festival and will probably play with some of the guest musicians too.

If you like any of the artists who are listed I highly recommend coming along because you are unlikely to get such a chance to hear them so intimately.

The venue is amazing for intimate music, amplification is used so subtly that you wouldn't know its there.

A word of warning for session addicts. This festival is more about listening and appreciating the music so you won't find tons of sessions like in Milltown or The World Fleadh. I suspect most of the session diehards will go to the World Fleadh at this time so any sessions at this festival are likely to be just as intimate as the concerts.

So if you like listening to pared down traditional Irish music with the occassional intimate session in between then this festival could be for you.

Hope to see you there :-)
