Éigse Mrs. Crotty 2006

Éigse Mrs. Crotty Traditional Music Festival and Summer School in Kilrush Co Clare will take place from August 16th to 20th. This festival celebrates the wonderful musical legacy of a talented and celebrated Clare woman - Elizabeth Crotty and it has grown steadily since the first weekend of music in 1995 in recognition of her considerable contribution to traditional Irish music in Clare, throughout Ireland and further afield.

The Concertina Summer School will run over three days (Thur, Fri and Sat) with classes in Concertina, Fiddle and Traditional Irish Singing at all levels. It will also include Concertina Maintenance Workshops and Concertina Masterclass.

The Open Air Céilís, which continue to be one of the highlights of the festival, will take place each evening in The Square and will feature Micheál Sexton and Pat Walsh (Wed) The Glenside Céilí Band (Thur) The Four Courts Céilí Band (Fri) The Abbey Céilí Band (Sat) and The Kilfenora Céilí Band (Sun). This is a wonderful and atmospheric setting for spectators as well as dancers. Look at the festival website www.eigsemrscrotty.com for pictures of céilís in previous years and you will get a flavour of the tremendous energy and fun.

The Mrs Crotty Memorial Concert features Liam Clancy and this takes place on Saturday night Aug 19th.

The Concertina Club (Wed - Sun) and Set Dancing Classes (Fri - Sun) will feature again this year and on Sunday the Mrs Crotty Memorial Mass will be followed by a visit to Mrs. Crotty's graveside and an Open Air Music Session in the Vandeleur Walled Garden.

Other events include Traditional Singing Session with Tim Dennehy and there will be music sessions in all pubs during the festival.

Eigse Mrs Crotty

This festival in west Clare follows on from the Feakle festival and is just before the All Ireland fleadh, so for anybody lucky enough to be spending August in Ireland, it shouldn´t be missed.
Kilrush is a spacious town with plenty of pubs for sessions and, as Ptarmigan mentions above, ceilis are held every evening in the town square.
This is my 8th year at the festival and although it´s getting harder to find accommodation, there is a self-catering hostel in town as well as numerous B&Bs. If you´re lucky, some of the B&Bs are in session pubs !
Although all instruments are to be found at the sessions, it´s a great occasion for concertina players to meet up and swap tunes, stories and talk about techniques.
If you play the ´tina, whatever your level, this is a festival not to be missed !
