THE BUTTON FACTORY COUNTY SESSIONS
Since November 2009, musician Conor Byrne in collaboration with one of Ireland’s most prestigious music venues, the Button Factory have been running Dublin’s only Folk Club which has offered several nights of unique music where each fortnight offers a programme of artists, which represents the vibrant traditional scene of a chosen county. The line-up consists of longstanding as well as new up and coming singers and musicians. A certainty for any lover of our rich traditional music heritage.
This young but very successful club has received high praise, more noteably it was included in a small list of musical highlights for 2009, alongside Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and U2.
… AT LAST, A FORTNIGHTLY CITY CENTRE GATHERING OF GREAT MUSIC AND MUSICIANS.

ARTISTS BIO’S
MICK LALLY – A native of the Mayo Gaeltacht of Tourmakeedy, this acclaimed actor needs very little introduction. Regarded as one of the most respected Irish theatre and film actors of our time, Mick has performed both in the Abbey as well as many other stages worldwide. A founder member of the respected Druid Theatre, Mick also has a great handle on traditional singing both in Irish and English. Many of his repertoire would represent the singing tradition of his native county.
LAOISE KELLY - Born in Westport in Co. Mayo, Laoise, is acknowledged as one of Ireland’s most acclaimed traditional harpers.
“Laoise Kelly is a young harpist with the disposition of an iconoclast and the talent and technique of a virtuoso.” Irish Times.
Three times All-Ireland Harp Champion, she has won many competitions including the O’Carolan Harp Festival and the Belfast Bicentennial Harp Festival competition, which commemorated the great Harp Festival of 1792 (awarded by Derek Bell/The Chieftains, “The triplets she played were made in heaven”).
Throughout her solo career she has recorded with many of Ireland’s foremost artists including Sinéad O’Connor, The Chieftains, Kate Bush, Dónal Lunny, Sharon Shannon, Míchéal Ó Suilleabháin, Altan, Davy Spillane, and countless others. Her ground-breaking solo album ‘Just Harp’ established her as “the most important harper currently playing” (Acousticmusic.com).
MARY STAUNTON - From the Gaeltacht of Tourmakeady in Co. Mayo, Mary inherits a long musical tradition. Her grandmother, Nora Staunton, was one of the most respected 'boxplayers' in the locality and was always in demand for the local house dances. Mary's father Mattie was a well-known fiddle player and her mother Kathleen as well as being a fine singer also plays the accordion. From an early age Mary had been singing. During her teenage years Mary played regularly with fellow Mayo musician, John Hoban. And in later years with acclaimed musicians including Alec Finn, Steve Cooney and Frankie Lane. Her debut solo recording ‘Bright Early Mornings’ still sounds as fresh today as it did during its release in1998 and the good news is that Mary has just completed her long awaited solo album which is due for release very soon.
EMER MAYOCK - A respected musician and composer also from Co. Mayo, Emer began to play traditional music during her childhood on a range of instruments including the Flute, Low Whistles, Fiddle and Uilleann Pipes. She has produced two CDs: 'Merry Bits of Timber' in 1996 and 'Playground' in 2001- the latter continuing her interest in writing new music and containing mostly her own compositions. Emer's love of the Flute in particular has lead her to bring it to centre stage on her recordings and at live concerts. She has worked with among others, traditional musicians Donal Lunny, Paddy Glackin, the late Michael 0' Domhnaill, Damien Dempsey, Breton harpist Alan Stivell, The Irish Chamber Choir, and the Grammy nominated Afro Celts.
JOHN HOBAN – Castlebar native, John Hoban - musician, singer, songwriter, poet - has travelled all over the world with his music. The ultimate multi-instrumentalist, John plays fiddle, accordian, mandolin, mandocello, harmonica etc ... He writes, composes his own songs and music. It has been said that he could make music from a sheaf of oats. Behind the talent and enthusiasm of John is a caring, wise artist. A simple man unfettered by much of the clutter we deem so important in modern society. John Hoban's music brings us back to the source. He searched out music from old masters, showing deep respect for the social contexts in which music was played for generations.
