Tim Britton is renowned as one of the innovators that have made Celtic music the vibrant scene it is. His unique style as an American with many influences is well founded on a profound knowledge of the tradition. Born into a family central in the Philadelphia folk scene, Tim grew up at the many festivals throughout the sixties. At age ten he became fascinated with his Celtic roots and immersed himself in all facets of the culture, learning the tin whistle, highland and uilleann pipes, wooden flute, mandolin and bodhrán as well as Scottish and Irish dancing. He quickly gained the respect of the musicians on the East Coast and was soon performing with the best of them. The scarcity of uilleann pipes led him to make his own set, quickly gaining respect in that field.
For over thirty years Tim has been touring, teaching, and recording, appearing on over three dozen records with the likes of Mick Moloney, Liz Carrol, Eileen Ivers, Johnny Cunningham, Robbie O'Connell, Gerald Trimble, Bela Fleck, John McCutcheon, Patrick Ball, Paddy O'Brien, Chulrua, Sage, The Seventh Ray and many others. He has taught extensively both privately and at piping conventions, festivals, and workshops. In 1989 he was designated a master artist by the Iowa Arts Council and was nominated for a "Best of Philadelphia Music Award". When not touring he keeps busy making pipes, sound engineering and producing, and selling audio equipment in Fairfield, Iowa.
Brian Miller
Esteemed Irish music critic Earle Hitchner writes that "the backing of [Brian] Miller on guitar flexes not just muscle but a fully complementary style." Also an accomplished singer and flute player, Miller began playing Irish music as a high-schooler in Bemidji, Minnesota.
He has been a highly visible character in the Twin Cities Irish music scene since 1998, while often sneaking off to his other adopted home of Cork, Ireland. He tours across the US and Canada with the Chicago-based band Bua as well as with the Two Tap Trio, The Doon Ceili Band and a duo with Norah Rendell. In Ireland he has been featured on TG4, RTE television and RTE radio. The Irish Times called his guitar accompaniment on Irish accordion player Tommie Cunniffe's 2007 solo album "superb".
Please note that the concert on Saturday, November 7, 2009 for Tim Btton and Brian Miller has changed to Jon and Shannon's home in Portland! Please contact Shannon via email at yogurda@gmail.com for reservations, address and directions!
