FRIDAY OCT 23rd 2009– Webstream Live from Rendezvous Pub Sligo.
Fiddle Maestro Mossie Martin, Brian Lennon on Flute, top Belfast Guitarist Paul Mc Sherry and Fiddler of Dooney Champion Matt Cranitch with guests.
Once upon a time if you wanted to experience a real dynamic Irish pub music session you would have to visit an Irish pub but this autumn thanks to modern technology you are a mere click away.
This year Sligo Live embraces the digital age by broadcasting some of the Festival’s top Traditional Sessions live on the internet. Similar to a TV show, the on-line broadcasts will zoom in and out of the Pubs and bars as they occur, capturing the atmosphere in each venue. Keep your eyes peeled for the occasional surprise along the way as guest artists’ drop into these sessions. Unlike a TV show you choose the music. Our world class musicians will be sitting waiting to play your requests. Is there a song you’d like to hear or a dedication to a loved one to share? Sligo Live is standing by the mailbox waiting to read your suggestions. info@sligolive.ie
Sligo Live is now in its fifth year and is one of Ireland’s fastest growing International Roots Music festivals. The festival’s unique fleadh like atmosphere of lively pub sessions and street entertainment combined with concerts, café performances and club nights gives an intimate and personal feel where festival goers mix freely with artists and really enjoy the atmosphere.
Sligo Live Co Producer Dervish member Shane Mitchell said, “It’s great to open out the session beyond the four walls of the pub; so that anyone can be part of a live music session from anywhere in the world. It’s not always easy for Celtic music fans from around the world to get to Ireland but certainly this webcast offers people the next best thing, capturing the event on line. It’s very exciting for us at Sligo Live to be part of this innovative production bringing the traditional Irish music session into the digital age”.
Sligo Live’s webcast producer, Deirdre Melvin said, “No matter where you are in the world you can join in the fun when it suits you. There will be a live stream that you can watch as it happens on your computer or cell phone. Or you can wait until you have a few friends gathered and watch it at your leisure.” As all the best things in life the webcasts are free to view.
The humble session has gone beyond the shores of Ireland. There is at least one Irish bar in almost every major town or city worldwide and traditional sessions are central to many pubs’ weekly entertainment. Some of the musicians taking part in these sessions around the world have never been to Ireland nor have any Irish roots, giving an indication of how multi-cultural Irish music has become. Of course Celtic music has grown in popularity worldwide with bands like The Chieftains, Dervish, Altan, Lunasa, Solas packing out some of the world’s biggest concert halls and forming an essential part of programming at mainstream festivals and world roots music events internationally.
Sligo Live is dedicated to marketing and developing traditional Celtic music alongside more contemporary music. Sligo Live celebrates the session as the core of Irish music. It is a melting pot for young and old to enjoy the true spirit of Irish music and Irish people and a community where long life friendships have begun and where romance has blossomed. It is one of Ireland’s richest natural resources. Sligo Live nurtures this culture and keeps it fresh in an ever changing Ireland. “traditional music has been at the heart of Sligo Live since our foundation and we are delighted the Arts Council will support the festival again this year through its Traditional Arts funding. It is now up to us to ensure this funding is used to develop new audiences for Celtic Music. The webcasts are an innovative way of achieving this” according to Rory O’Connor, Festival Producer.
Sligo Live has carved out a niche as one of the most relaxed and enjoyable music festivals in Ireland. The Festival, which takes place from Thursday, 22nd – Monday, 26th October, will host an amazing line up this October Bank Holiday Weekend! The dynamic session programme features dozens of musicians including Frankie Gavin, P.J. Hernon, Tony De Marco, John Wynne, Maurice Lennnon, Paul McSherry, Declan Folen, Brid Harper, Tara Breen, Dave Sheridan, Oisin MacDiarmada and Matt Cranitch in addition to International stars Martha Wainwright, Imelda May, Josh Ritter, The Saw Doctors, Comedian PJ Gallagher, Wallis Bird, Jinx Lennon and Paula Flynn, Chris Meehan and his Redneck Friends, Oddsocks Revival, Oisin and many more.
