fiddle/guitar role models?

fiddle/guitar role models?

My son the fiddler and I have been offered a gig -- our first. So far we've been goofing around, and what we played tonight was a 3-tune Irish set to which I applied my slightly-advanced mid-60s folk finger-picking.

All off the top of our heads, so far. I'd love to hear some really good fiddle-acoustic guitar recordings (Celtic/Gaelic/Cajun/Mexican/cowboy/...) to get some ideas of what works and what doesn't.

Suggestions?

Michael Etchison

(ps -- he plays the viola, but don't tell anyone)

Re: fiddle/guitar role models?

Andy McGann/Paul Brady
Martin Hayes/Randal Bays
Randal Bays/Randal Bays
James Kelly/Zan McLeod
Liz Carroll/John Doyle & Daihti Sproule
Alisdair Fraser/Tony McManus
Pat O'Connor/Eoin O'Neill (zouk, not guitar, but great stuff anyway)
Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli.....oops never mind!
ets for listening. You can benefit from hearing all combinations of instruments, especially since you'll get to know the tunes better. But, for guitar players, also check out Junji Shirota, Arty McGlynn, Paul McSherry, Zan McLeod etc.

Also listen to Bouzouki players, especially Cyril O'Donaghue, Eoin O'Neill, Alec Finn etc.

Re: fiddle/guitar role models?

You might check out "Overland" by Randal Bays and Daithi Sproule (DADGAD guitar tuning).

There's also the classic "Live in Seattle" release by Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill (standard guitar tuning).

Re: fiddle/guitar role models?

All the above are good suggestions. Just have fun and enjoy yourself, there is nothing finer than playing music with members of your own family! Me and the wife are a fiddle and guitar duo ourselves.

Re: fiddle/guitar role models?

That Bays/Sproule "Overland" is wonderful.

A very recent one is Kevin Burke and Ged Foley, called "In Tandem," brilliant!

I do love "The Ring Sessions" from James Kelly and Zan McLeod, too. A 'classic' for guitar/zouk-ists.

Re: fiddle/guitar role models?

Ian Carr's a bit of a genious, but ... he tried to AVOID listening to other guitarists, presumably to limit limitations.

Have a listen and see what you could have done if you'd not listened to him!
