Cyril O'Donoghue

Cyril O'Donoghue

I've been listening to the CD "late... in the night," by Christy Barry and Conor McCarthy and Cyril Donoghue on guitar and bouzouki.

This album is -great- fun, and I've just left it on repeat most of the morning. I've also enjoyed his playing with the Mulcahys, et al.

I went searching for some info on the bouzouki that Cyril plays on this recording, but I haven't been able to find any...

Do any of you good folk know about Cyril's bouzouki(s)?

Many thanks,

stv

I believe it's an Andrew Manson.

Re: Cyril O'Donoghue

Hi, Cyril plays a small bodied Joe Foley bouzouki, and an old medium-large bodied Manson zouk.

If you get on to Custys music shop here in Ennis, they have his solo album, which he made about two yrs ago.
Himself and Tola Custy made a great album together, along time ago now, but they should have some left in stock at the shop.

Re: Cyril O'Donoghue

For Irish bouzouki, Cyril is my favorite. The other player that I enjoy as much is Alec Finn. Both of these players treat the instrument as what it is rather than just a funny looking guitar. One of my favorite recordings of Cyril is the one he made with Josephine Marsh back in 1990, "To Meet a Friend." Sadly, the recording might have been limited to the first batch of tapes and never was released on CD. On that recording Cyril sings, "Lady Fair" -- my favorite broken token song.

Re: Cyril O'Donoghue

Wonderful, thanks!

Anybody have a link to Andrew Manson, or any further info on him and his work? I've not heard of him before.

I -love- Joe Foley's instruments.

Thanks,

Re: Cyril O'Donoghue

The C O' D / Tola Custy recording is called "Settin' Free" and it's a gem - one of my favourites; the Broken Pledge/Jenny's Welcome to Charlie set is worth the money alone.
