Best place to listen in around the San Francisco Area?
Best place to listen in around the San Francisco Area?
What is the best place in the San Francisco area to go listen to Irish Trad.? It doesn't have to be in the city. I'm looking to hear some local sessions. I've checked the sessions page and the members page, but there isn't a lot of information, fewer times mentioned, and no responses to e-mails. Is there no one here?
There are session there all the time (the beginning of this month is out due to renovations), with different hosts. The third Tuesday of the month is a welcoming slow-session; all the others are great listening and also open. The behavior and interest of the punters varies greatly.
Recently a few ofther sessions have lapsed. One of them, Wilde Oscars, I really liked, for listening and playing - really too bad. But keep watching, as it might start up again.

You must not have emailed me. Anyway, for the time being in SF for right now the Plough seems to be the only session going. There are some sessions going on down on the peninsula closer to where you are, but I don't know exactly where and when. People from those sessions also drive up to ours and that's where I've heard about it.

There is a great little session in Palo Alto- check the S.F Pipers Club's website for the Tuesday session. Justine and Bob are great to play some tunes. If you go, tell 'em hi from Fel.
Re: Best place to listen in around the San Francisco Area?
If you want to head up to the Santa Cruz Mtns., we started a session at a nice little Scottish pub, just north of Boulder Creek on Hwy 9. The White Cockade
We're doing Irish music on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month (~4pm) and there's Bluegrass on the 2nd and 4th Sundays....
(Sorry, had to plug it. We just started it and are trying to get more people coming down...been a slow start ... but it's a really great place to play, so we're trying to keep it going. One drink, on the house, for all muscians.

Grack - That looks like a lovely place; I'll try to check it out this spring/summer. Farr - Erin Shrader was hosting a session at Wilde Oscar's that ended recently; perhaps she would be interested...

Item: We will not be at O'Flaherty's this Sunday night. It seems we have been ousted because of Sport. At least a couple of us will be at the White Cockade in Boulder Creek instead.

In the East Bay it's the Starry Plough in Berkeley every Sunday evening around 8:00 or so. A very welcoming, open session featuring singers also. It's run by Shay Black.
The Starry Plough also hosts ceilidh dance/lessons on Monday nights.

Re: Best place to listen in around the San Francisco Area?
Wow. So, Irish Trad. is not dead on the Peninsula. Yay!
I wish I was ready to lead a session, but I've got so much to learn. I'm still getting the hang of bluegrass jam sessions. (Yes, I also do bluegrass.)
Thanks for all your responses. I'm going to make it a point to visit, listen, and learn.
Cheers!
