I'm looking for a birthday present for my son and would like to give him a playable used mandolin (flat body, not the gourd). Preferably one that is already broken in with Irish tunes. Can't afford too much, say around $150. Is that totally whacky?
My son is living in Ohio but will be moving to Madrid in the fall. I live in New Hampshire. So if you have a mandolin to sell, I would be grateful for a response here, or just send me an email. Need this by early June... Thanks!
I actually bought a Rogue Mandolin off of eBay (from a guy that was just reselling for Musician's Friend, actually) recently as a bit of a gag gift for a friend of mine. And believe it or not, it's not a horrible little mandolin! It's got decent tone and volume. (Not that I ran out and bought one for myself or anything, but I was pleasantly surprised).
If you're looking for a good starter mandolin, that Rogue isn't bad, and you can probably find it on eBay cheaper than other places (just beware of people charging $50 for shipping)
I actually bought one of those $40.00 Rogue mandolins from Musician's Friend myself for use when my 1922 Gibson should be left safe at home ... and I have been pleasantly surprised at its quality, I got the durafoam case which brought the total package up to abot 90.00 shipped and I am pleased beyond all measure. I'm a school orchestra director and I bought two more for the school and the kids are doing fine on them. They have good easy action and the tone is actually more than tolerable. If I were you I'd finish off the order with an extra set of strings because the ones that came with it have quickly rusted up, and I'd get one of those $9.00 Planet Wave leather mandolin straps so your son starts off with a better playing position. I think he'll be very happy and off to a good start. Sounds like a great birthday present to me! (Mine is December 19th if you're feeling extra generous as the holidays roll around)
I bought a Martin backpacker mandolin over the intersnot from a company in Texas. It arrived very quickly and cost exactly half of the UK £ cost buying by plastic card in US $.
Thanks everyone for your help. I ended up ordering a Rogue from Musicians Friend and also got a hardshell case, 2 sets of Martin mandolin strings, a pitch pipe, a Planet Wave leather strap, and some medium Martin picks. All for less than $120.

Try looking at www.mandolincafe.com. They have a classified section that might have something you would be interested in purchasing.

Re: Anyone have a mandolin for sale?
I've never tried this myself, but Musician's Friend has a $50 Rogue A style model.
