Active sessions in London, UK

Sorry about posting a thread here, but browsing through the "Sessions" search led me to conclusion that most of the sessions posted there are dead & gone.

I hope to be in London from 8th till 13th May and would like to see and hear as many sessions as I can. I would appreciate if the peolpe living there could present some lists of active ones. I know you won't dissapoint me ;-)

Re: Active sessions in London, UK

Hi damirban,
We often have a few in South East London...we also have some sessions. Here's some that are very much alive:
Blythe Hill Tavern - fairly solid
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/451
Holly Tree - tends towards beginners
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/739
Shillelagh's - is semi-regular on saturdays - email cath me or Aidan Crossey to find out if definitely on
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/695
Dylans allegedly is still on but I personally wouldn't go near it
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/695

As for other parts of London, I can't really speak on their behalf, but I am aware that Power's bar, the Porterhouse, The Kilkenny and Tir na nÓg are still functioning

http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/32

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on any of these.
Good luck in your travels!

Also there are 3 pubs where I've been offered sessions, but can't get enough musicians along!

Re: Active sessions in London, UK

Slightly off topic.........

but my old local The Dukes Head in Richmond SW London used have a session every Tuesday night. But one night the council came round and told the gaffer (a Limerick man) that if he wanted to continue the session he would have to hire door staff. Its only a wee pub in a residential area. Apparently if you have more than two musicians then you have to have door staff. Hence the session is no more.

Re: Active sessions in London, UK

Here is a great session: A traditional irish pub called the Kilkenney everyday tuesday night in Tooting (South London)
People start to go there from about 9, it has a different set of people everynight, but then the usuals turn up. Its a home away from home!

Re: Active sessions in London, UK

I joined 3 sessions in London last month as an "exotic" visitor. The sessions are as good as or sometimes even better than those you come across in Ireland. It's really hard to find that relaxed sessions while travelling in Ireland. And I was really impressed by the friendliness of local musicians. I can't thank them enough.

As a stranger, you have to be careful about the transport and accomodation there. I really don't know who will check, but here are some useful links.

http://www.hostelworld.com/findabed.php/ChosenCity.London/ChosenCountry.England
Check *both* the location and rating. Many of best hostels are a bit hard to find or access, so it's better to stick to the ones rated above 70 or preferably 75 and located near the centre.

Of course, you should check how to get to the pub from your accomodation and vice versa in advance.

Re: Active sessions in London, UK

Thank you all very much for replying! You've been most helpfull! Maybe we'll meet somewhere, and when we do we'll have a pint or two, or three, maybe four, then through the door, out, in another pub, for more. Is this a poem of some kind, he he he? I'm just over excited...

Re: Active sessions in London, UK

I was in Killkenny tavern and it was magnificent, first time in my life I've seen three sets of pipes at the same time (I wasn't drunk FYI), almost 20 players banging away! Had to run away to catch the last train though and didn't get to chat with any of the musicians. If any of you were there, i'd like to get in contact. "Fluter", thanks for the tip!
