Ronan Flaherty / Edel Fox Debut Album preview last night on Clare FM

Anoyone get a listen to the two preview tracks from the album? Was listenin to it myself
thought it sounded great........very old style, drawing comparisons with the Linnane / Hill recording, especially with Brian Mc Grath on piano and "Alec Finn like" accompaniment on bouzouki
sounds like its gonna be a great album
Its due out in 2 weeks!!

Theres a launch in Milltown Malbay and Galway early to mid June and it'd be great to see alot of support for these two young musicians carrying on the music in the old style!!

I'm not sure I like the style- it's not in the spirit I go for.I heard her play in Galway last summer and it sounded furious, fast, tecnically very skilled, but...

Re: Ronan Flaherty / Edel Fox Debut Album preview last night on Clare FM

but what????

many musicians play at a much higher tempo in a live session environment that they do when it comes to concert performances or recording.

This is simply down to the audience involved. In a lively pub with a large crowd, playing nice subtle music at a relaxed tempo is completely lost on a crowd, the majority of which wouldn't know a jig from a reel. However, when playing to peers and fellow musicians, a more measured approach is the more usual course of action.

If you didn't see Edel's performance at the Gradam TG4 you really should get a copy, it was class, and I'm hopeful its a taste of whats to come from her album.

I'm sure this recording will sit nicely amongst other great concertina recordings like those of Noel Hill, Michael O'Raghallaigh, Tony O Connell etc. Looking forward to the launch :)

smuit's comment strikes me as odd. When Edel played a concert here last summer with Jackie Daly, her tempos were very moderate. In fact, when I listen to the recording, there's a reel set that she starts solo at 96 beats per minute. When Jackie joins in after one time through, he kicks the tempo up to about 106, and even that is on the slow side. The hornpipe set and the slip jig set that she did solo were also on the slow side, exactly the way I like it.

I saw Edel live a couple of times and came across a recording of her live(bootleg) and she is brilliant. Anyone know if Eoin O Neill is playing bouzouki on the album?

Re: Ronan Flaherty / Edel Fox Debut Album preview last night on Clare FM

i haven't heard the tracks yet, but to offer potential concordance to differing accounts of her style----i have noticed that many of the younger wizards i think of as the "post-noel-hill" school, having outsize technnical chops, dizzying speed and all the post-nh ornamental buzzes, bizzes, bells & whistles at their fingertips, seem able to deliver the postmodern blizzard of wizzardry, or, alternately, the slower, sparer, old-school "post-packie" soul kiss, depending on inclination or occasion, even on the same occasion. i have heard the concertina healy brother (sorry, can't recall if it's hugh or colm), and noel himself do both, and beautifully.....can't wait to hear this cd!

Yes I guess I hadn't considered the fact that the gig I was at was one for the tourists on Galway's Shop Street, and while it wasn't heaving, it was fairly busy and maybe noisy. It was just my first impression of her music, and hadn't heard her playing before. That could explain why I got the impression they were going through the motions on stage, and you know maybe they were on that one night.

I am going to get a copy of the cd when it gets out to listen to her properly. I have huge respect for Brian McGrath and any change to hear his stuff is good!! And good luck to her

Where can I find these 2 preview tracks?

Re: Ronan Flaherty / Edel Fox Debut Album preview last night on Clare FM

Celtic 1234 - It's Michael Mc Cague who is the bouzouki player on the album!! He's from Monaghan, but living in Galway this past 5 years!!
.....and to The Phantom Button, these two preview tracks were played on Clare Fm on Wednesday night 26th April just past, on a programme presented by Eoin O Neill so it should be easy enough to get your hands on them,
.........and in any case there has been tracks sent to a number of radio stations so just keep an eye out, or an ear open for them!!

http://www.clarefm.ie archives about a week's worth of trad shows, in mp3 format. The website shows that it's available now. Of course you may have to listen to most of the show to find those tracks. Thankfully they remove the commercials when they put the shows in the archive.

I'm still on dial-up. Is that the only place?

Re: Ronan Flaherty / Edel Fox Debut Album preview last night on Clare FM

That's the only place I know of.

I'm listening right now after several failed attempts to load the file. It's toward the end of the show, definitely the last half hour.

The first cut was a set of three reels: Fisherman's Lilt, Musical Priest, and one that I'm not able to identify (it's familiar, but I couldn't find it in Norbek's collection!) They play them around 110 beats per minute.

The second cut was two hornpipes: Poll Ha'penny and The Peacock's Feather. About 80 bpm for the first and around 85 for the second.

Eoin was raving about Edel, calling her one of the finest musicians in the county, and even in the country, and saying that Clare FM would "play it like mad."
