A friend and I are planning on going to the southwest of Ireland during the summer on holiday. We plan on stopping in Clare, Kerry, Cork, and Limerick, and are looking around for sessions in those areas. Could anyone recommend how we might find some favorite tunes that are played there? (sites, the tunes themselves, links, etcetera).
Thanks so much.
I would say, turn up with whatever repertoire you have and a pair of open ears - also, perhaps a notepad and a discreet sound-recording. There are just too many tunes played in Clare, Kerry, Cork and Limerick to recommend a few favourites - and some sessions will be limited to mostly local repertoire, whilst others will be more 'eclectic' in their choice of tunes. However, nowadays, most places in Ireland are fairly cosmopolitan, musically speaking, so, if you have some well-known traditional tunes in your repertoire, you are almost certain to have some tunes in common with the local musicians.
Don't worry too much about 'swotting up' before you go - just take advantage of being there to soak in as much as you can.
Have a great time in Ireland.
I agree with spoon, you'll find a lot of sessions where "standard", run of the mill tunes are played and others where they'll have their own local repertoires.
Go along and have a great time. I see you're visiting from Ohio. Here's a link to a Carlow ITM site if any help to you. Carlow's SE of the country, BTW, I found the "session in Inis Oirr, Arainn" the better of the links on the site.

Tipperaryharper - As you probably guessed, when I said, "a discreet sound-recording", I meant, "a discreet sound-recording device".
