Re: Great CD

I believe that it was compiled by the great Donal Clancy. Looking at some of the names, I would say that I have high expectations.

Re: Great CD

yes, compiled by Donal Clancy, and I also think he's the best one on it, both a great flatpicker AND fingerpicker. Randall Bays, best known as a fiddler is pretty amazing too.

I found some of the tracks too over arranged with overtracking, but the playing is still great, just personal taste.

Re: Great CD

Iris, I really loved this CD and I agree about your comments. I was very unaware of DonalClancy's talents up till then.
As for Randall Bays, no-one should be allowed to be that good on the guitar and amazing on the fiddle as well. I am trying to convince him to come down here to Australia soon.

Re: Great CD

Donogh, have you heard John Carty playing guitar? I've heard him last winter and was absolutely shocked - he played three solo pieces before moving effortlessly to banjo and fiddle - and I demand that playing more than TWO instruments with such mastery should be banned by law.

Re: Great CD

Oops, sorry for misspelling your name, Donough - my finger slipped on the cayboerd.

Re: Great CD

This is one of the nicest CDs I have come across in some time. I was expecting an anthology of previously issued material, and what is included is newly recorded for the album. Superb playing, and a real tutorial for those of us who play the instrument. John Doyle's tracks are overdubbed, with him accompanying himself, what I want to know is which was laid down first, the melody or the rhythm--the results are so smooth that it sounds like both were recorded at the same time, live in the studio!
Donal Clancy is really coming into his own--his taste in collecting this album are superb, and his own contributions outstanding. He also has done some great work on the new Winifred Horan/Mick McAuley CD (Serenade), which is really more of a trio than a duo effort--he is a big part of the sound. And not to mention his recent work with Danu. And one of my favorite albums in recent years is the Mary Rafferty CD where he provided all the accompaniment. He is a credit to a family that already has a fine name in the musical world.

Re: Great CD

Donough... I keep telling Donal that Danu ought to let him do some tunes on his own on stage! He is very modest!! He's pretty amazing.

We just had Mary and Mike Rafferty hosting our session in Rockaway NJ, they were wonderful. We have the session recording done and available now too.

Randal Bays' best kept secret is what an amazing guitarist he is!

Re: Great CD

So while I was out tonight I picked up this CD. Haven't listened to it yet though.

Iris, the session with the Raffertys was great. I can't wait until the one with Larry McCollough tomorrow. I went to see Danu in March and Donal and Eamon had a couple tunes together which lead into a full band thing. Almost like his own solo, but not really. Something funny from that night is that by chance I was seated one seat away from Eilleen the Harp player from the IAANJ, and this was in a theatre with assigned seating.

Re: Great CD

The CD will be there tonight, i have worked like a madwoman getting it ready for tonight. We'll record with Larry tonight, should be a flutefest!

We're working out the sound issues little by little on the CD recordings. The Raffertys were well pleased with the sound and the CD. What I like most is the little snippets of Mike talking, about the Banshee especially. You'll hear it, it's just charming.

We'll be doing more Father/Daughter things in the future, just booked in for 6/23 Mary and Jim Coogan.... can't wait for that!

I think this session is going so well because of the guest hosts being such strong players, otherwise it's hard to keep a big session like this as together as it is. Some are saying the session CDs are some of the best Irish CDs around because you get the excitement of the night captured, and the music is pretty high octane too, nice to hear SOME of the crowd nose in the background, we've gotten it down to a good level, it adds to the atmosphere. It's a great party..... a lot of work for some of us...LOL, but I love doing it, love doing the recordings afterwards, though it means 25-30 hours of work and a few doses of aggrivation.

Jerry O'Sullivan will be out 5/5. A great event for sure. And John Nolan back on 6/9 and Linda Hickman on 7/7. It's great for the listeners too, like a free concert, night out with all that free food, beer, where else can they find that!
