I'm thinking about getting one of these (*not* for ITM or STM, for which I use my lovely old 1829 Mittenwald !)
I've tried the Yamaha and liked the feel and action. Can anyone give me any feedback (no pun intended) on this model. Our local instrument dealer has one for £379.
I personally have found that the sound quality on these is rather dubious; the range was designed for practice purposes (initially). I use a "bridge" myself (http://www.electricviolins.com/) and have been really happy with both the fiddle and the continuing high standard of service from their team in terms of maintanance. Bridge electric violins were the first electric violins that many professionals would consider using; for that amount of money you are probably better off buying a decent pickup for a nice acoustic fiddle.
I've got one of these, but it's only for practice purposes. With 2 kids revising for exams, it's invaluable. I agree with Barry that the sound quality is nothing to write home about, especially through headphones, but it beats the old rubber practice mute over the bridge.
The girlie group Bond used to use these for their concerts, but then again, nobody was probably concentrating on the quality of the sound, not in those outfits!
Now they've made a pile, they're using Violectra's.
If it's a matter of keeping the neighbours happy, then they serve their purpose
Hi there, just found this session when I typed Yamaha Silent Violins into Google! I am a Yamaha Silent String Artist in Australia. I currently perform on the SV120 and the SV200. Before I became an artist I researched all the instruments available in Australia and it was very clear to me that Yamaha had the best to offer when it came to sound and price. I perform every week in my electric string group Maske. I have put my two instruments through every possible situation and they have never let me down. They sound absolutley briliant through a proffessional sound system and look great on stage. They also make practicing back stage before a performance and in the hotel room very easy! I have recenlty purchased the Yamaha Magic Stomp digital effects processor and have found the most lush delay/reverbs that even through my headphones make me sound unreal! If anyone has any questions regarding the Yamaha Silent Electric please feel free to ask. My website is www.maskemusic.com or www.suzieg.com. Thanks Suzie G
This is an old, old thread by now. But I wanted to add that the Yamaha has the SUPER DUPER advantage of allowing an iPod input so you can listen to your mp3s and play along and no neighbors will ever complain. There is a balance wheel for fiddle/iPod mix. I used it on the beach recently, where I'd NEVER take my fiddle, and it was great, even jammed with some local reggae players. Finally, with an AG Stomp from Yamaha it's really lush and interesting. And it plugs directly into your computer for recording. So there are a lot of good points that make this more than just another instrument.

Bad, avoid, buzzing bees come to mind, yecch!
The newer, and more pricey, Yamahas are much better.

Has anyone tried the 5-string EV-205, the most costly of all the Yamaha electrics?
