May Meetup Sligo (15-18), Aran (19), Galway (20-21), Ennis (22-26)

Friends and neighbors:

I, with wife and several college-age traditional-music students, will be traveling on a roaming seminar in May on the above dates. More specifically, the itinerary is:

May 15 Ballaghaderreen, Roscommon
May 16-18 Sligo town
May 19 Killronan, Inishmore
May 20-21 Galway city
May 22-26 Ennis

These are students in a 15-week seminar in "Music, Folklore and Traditional Culture in Irish History" (blog at http://hons3304.blogspot.com, if you're curious). All are well-versed in trad art forms, culture, and behavior and are polite and self-effacing. for myself, my profile is at http://thesession.org/members/display/1733 or you can visit http://coyotebanjo.com to check my credentials.

Drawing on collective wisdom, I would be glad to meet up with net-friends for tunes, chat, visits, and/or simply recommendations for interesting activities. I've traveled, played, and stayed in all the above spots and that's why I'm bringing students back to these same locations (for example, from the Sligo location we're including the Queen Mebh Ulster Cycle locations, the Hyde Museum, the Yeats Memorial, Molloy's and O'Malley's in Westport, Shoot-the-Crows/Sheela-na-Gig in Sligo, Peter Horan's various hosting sessions, Boyle Abbey, Ceide Fields, and the Coleman Heritage Center).

I would be very happy to have suggestions (off-list is best) regarding analogous activities and/or musical meetups at all these locations. Many thanks.

All the best,

chris smith

Chris, have you explored Kenny's bookshop in Galway? I used to go there very often before lunch simply because the city is very boring in the morning. The entrace is small, but they have tons of interesting old books, maps, and prints. They also have a lovely gallery. You'll find many works obviously inspired by folk culture and the scenery. I'm sure your students will be fascinated. And you can even purchase some of them. The current exhibition seems quite nice. http://www.kennys.ie

Chris "you must be in the know" because your visit to Ennis couldn't have been better planned, coinciding as it does with Fleadh Nua week. Admittedly you'll miss the final weekend with the gig-rig in the street, outdoor sessions, céilí dancing etc but there's still lots for musicians in the earlier part of the week. This includes a free lunchtime concert every day in the Council Chambers (above the Fleadh Office), daily Irish language classes followed by a session tunes workshop. A Club Fleadh Nua session will take place nightly at one of the Ennis hostelries where all musicians are encouraged to take part (ie not one of those gig type sessions).

Wednesday night(24th May) will be very special as there's an event in Cois na hAbhna to celebrate the 50th anniversary of that great 1956 fleadh in Ennis that Robbie McMahon has immortalised in song. Hopefully Robbie will be on hand to sing the song as veterans from the event and their descendants take to the stage!!

Hopefully your students will have a very memorable time in the Banner County!

Not sure if you'll be checking back in here while you're in Ireland Chris, but that cell number you gave doesn't work.
