Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

This show is a complete insult to the Irish culture. What a load of crap! I hope everyone here has the same opinion.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Here Here !!! The least they could have done was to have used Irish dance music.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Saw a bit of it last week. Sad.

You should never hope that everyone here has the same opinion!

Too painful to watch...Jean Butler has sadly gone down in my estimation as a result...

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

??? What is "Celebrity Jigs n' Reels"? Could someone post a link or something so those of us who've never heard of this show can see what the fuss is about?

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

I put this, "Celebrity Jigs n' Reels" (with quotation marks) into Google and the first link was for the show.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Thanks for that Jack but I think my life has not been enriched greatly by following those links ;)

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Nor would it be enriched if you had been successful

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Leaving aside the title of the show, which is completely misleading, I did understand that they were supposed to be dancing to 'contemporary modern Irish music' i.e. U2 and Corrs, that sort of stuff. Caught the reprise last night and heard a snatch of The Monkees!! Definitely not contemporary except perhaps for some of the aged celebs. - Irish?? is there a tenuous link there somewhere between the Monkees and Ireland that I'm missing? A load of crap, I agree.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

I went and checked out the website, looked at some clips from the show and have to say... it's a fun idea! At least they're trying out something a bit different, don't you think?

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

I have found this new show to be fun and promotes Irish dance so we shouldn't be overly critical. However, I think it is the title of the show that is wrong, there are no Jigs and Reels in the show. Now before I get beaten into submission by the dancers I will admit that there are Jig steps and Reel steps in the show :)
Also, this concept of irish dance to rock/pop/reggae/etc is not something new. I was in Chicago for St. Patricks day and every dance school seems to be doing this which is most disturbing!

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Went to the site homepage, no further. We've got our own 'Dancing with the Stars'. Who stays? Who goes? Makes you sick. Don't want to know.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

I dunno,
I just checked out RTE's website and looked at a few clips, this looks bleedin' hilarious. Finally RTE gets comedy right. If you want traddy stuff hang yer hat on TG4 and RNaG.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

I just saw a few clips on RTE –TV and nearly throw up my lunch, are the Irish gone mad?

# Posted on April 10th 2006 by Bog_Trotter

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Took a quick peep at a few of the clips. I have to agree with Larsheen......the programme title is a "tad" misleading and it's a pity the money could not have been spent better. I suppose the programme has it's audience though ?

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

The community of people who play trad music in Ireland is quite small. This is probably true of the dance community also. The unfortunate thing is that following Riverprance and the spate of similar money-making garbage shows that it spawned, every monkey who has an Irish passport thinks they have a contribution to make to the furthering of "Celtic Culture".
This show, is hopefully the bottom of that barrel of mediocrity, and the last of it's type. It's heartening to see that someone of your youth can see through it PaddyCmusic.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Well, it's nice to see all of your side of the coin guys. The main thing that cheesed (to be polite) me off was the fact that your woman that directed said something along the lines of "These people have no experience of Irish dancing so we can't jump straight into using jigs and reels. They'll find it easier if it's more modern music". I mean seriously, that just made me really mad for the rest of the night!!

Would the show have lost a few viewers if the music had been traditional, do you think?

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

I saw a few clips and whew! Bad news! I can't believe they are dancing to the Monkees? Come on now! I was truly embarrassed for. In my opinion, they will never dance correctly without the proper music being played. :-)

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Sorry.....I forgot a word......"embarrassed for them."

Definitley.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Good post Larsheen. It boils down to money at the end of the day. If its a success to the public then everyone but trad heads are content.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

The Irish, just like their close allies the British, are run by, and dominateed by, the Good old US of A. The rest of the countries are European, and have better cultural values.

The entire TV programming is now "Celebrity whatever", usually having had "ordinary" people do it first. The only good news is that it cannot be too long before we have "Celebrity Russian Roulette".

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Dear bodhran bliss
I think it was a bit of a overstatement that Ireland is a close allie of Britain,I don’t think so.
Thank you.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

You obviously don't know much about Ireland, or Britain. We are the 51st and 52nd states, without voting rights.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

You'll be too busy to start, flying out of Shannon to invade Iran, playing O'Neills march with 3 bodhrans. But wait until Mr Bush tells us.

# Posted on April 12th 2006 by bodhran bliss

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

Dear bodhran bliss,
Talking about invading a country, the last time I noticed 6 counties of Ireland was still under British forced occupation, a close allie,I don’t think so.

PS: I do agree 100% with you on your Bush comment.

Thank you,
GWB.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

well 1st of all i didn't see any "celebrities"!!!they're all wannabes.plus yeah i agree they should be dancin ti proper irish music.if you're gonna do it, at least do it properly.

Re: Celebrity Jigs n' Reels

"promotes Irish dance" ...???!!!!

As far as I can see, Celebrity Jigs n' Reels does the exact opposite...replacing traditional music with popular music simply reinforces any negative stereotypes people might have about traditional Irish music being 'outdated' or irrelevant. Almost like they feel they have to apologise for the tradition.

Rant over!
