I am drawn to Irish music and I would love to learn to play the bodhran. However, I am worried about the staid and drab image of ITM players and am concerned that if I got involved in ITM then I would lose any chance I might have with the opposite sex. So my question is this – do you feel that the benefits of the Irish music fraternity outweigh the loss of a sex life. Do any of the old timers on the site have any regrets?
Sorry? Sex/ITM what's the difference? Just as much fun and nearly as much sweat! Don't be fooled by the woolley jumpers and comfy shoes they are just a cover up for the mad nights of mayhem and remember Pan played the pipes!
It must be that your love life isn't all that much to brag about to begin with that you would be so concerned. Apparently you are one of these for whom "getting lucky" is like winning the lottery. ITM, or for that matter any form of non-mainstream music is definitely not going to improve things and will certainly lower your already low odds (and you need to play the odds!) In addition you are thinking bodhran. What are you thinking? Even in Rock bands the drummers don't get the babes! Besides unless you are a gifted player who's session etiquette is flawless (two things rarely found in bodhan players) your not likey to be accepted into the, as you put it "Irish music fraternity" anyhow.
My recomendation would be that you skip the idea altogether it's only going to be a lose-lose cituation for you. Sorry to break it to you this way.
As one of the most highly qualified "old timers", I can assure you that deftly flashing your tipper is one of the most successful chick magnets imaginable.
Good luck.
Well, my girlfriend is as obsessed with the band Great Big Sea as I am-it's that that brought us together. Also, I want to mention that I'm teaching a girl how to play the bodhran and I think she's attracted to me. And people also think it's very cool that I play the button accordion, which is weird cause I thought it would be like a big "I am a loser, kick the crap out of me" sign.
Oh, and it seems to me-Only ITM players hate bodhrans. Other people-the 'punters' I think they're called-like them. If played well, they are great, and add huge amounts to the music. No matter what the people who'd rather hear solo melody say.
Overheard at a local session, said by a female visitor (name withheld) about the local banjo player: "I'd sleep with him for just those triplets alone."
Sidney - the priests used to destroy musical instruments because they were used for playing dance music and consequently encouraged members of the opposite sex to get closer than the clergy approved.
So you see, traditional music is sexy.
I have found fiddling with a box can do wonders for the flute! Of course, in your case, I think you would be better off staying home and beating your drum.

conan when are ye going to grow the pot belly and big tashy, did you get the standard jewish circumcision done yet. It puts them into good practice for demanding 20% off everything in life apparently ???
I might be stating the obvious but if every female plaing ITM was the combination of brains, integrity and beauty that Andee is, then every man I know would take up ITM.
I also don't see any reason anyone on this board needs to defend their relative social prowess to Sidney. Who is Sidney anyway? Notice how we haven't heard much from El-Sid since the wind-up began. Who cares?
Yea... he's way above the others all right -- in another galaxy really. I'm a huge Diz fan. I once saw him live at a jazz club in the village. I was sitting just a few feet from where he was. I have to admit though, watching him made my cheeks and neck ache.
I haven't noticed an adverse (or positive) affect on the romantic front resulting from my increased involvement with ITM. Perhaps that is because my wife is also an ITM player, and has been my companion on this musical journey. But then again, I am over 50, balding, grey-haired, bearded and thick around the middle, so I don't notice such things like I used to.
I dont know, but me thinks ITM is quite fashionable nowadays with the ladies. It works for me all the time...well, not ALL the time, but u get my drift......i got my hole a couple of times 'cos of the music playin'
poldebrun, there's a fella on this site who just created a website of his own. His name is ptarmigan and he's looking for people like you to stir up the discussions there.
Sorry for that lapse of shallowness. I flatter everyone, it's perhaps a bad habit my grandmother, who is 89 years young, alway's told me it would get me everywhere, and as a manger of people I've found that it's not a bad way to keep a happy atmosphere in the kitchen, even if it's the just the fellas I'm talking to.
The point I was trying to get at was that even if playing "The Music" were to segregate us from the rest of the world (which it doesn't of course) the "Irish music fraternity" (as Sidney put it) certainly has it's fair share of lovely ladies in it.

I agree with banjoian.
The mrs flashes her eyes at me whenever I pick up the banjo.
She also makes a sort of threatening noise.

Re: Sex and ITM
For the record I think a guy who plays the music is instantly more attractive no matter what the instrument of choice is.
And let's be careful with the ethnic jokes.
Remember we have a very large and diverse community here which includes Jewish, Chinese, Japanese and many, many others of different backgrounds.
