Raw almond oil: where might I find it?

Raw almond oil: where might I find it?

I would like to get more raw almond oil for oiling my flute. I had a supply from a friend in a generic bottle (the oil, not the friend), so I have no idea what it was. It has now run out. I am told that I want raw oil as opposed to processed oil. Why is the difference important, and where might I find raw almond oil? I have found bottles of almond oil in gourmet sections of grocery stores, but I don't know whether it is processed or raw (doesn't say). This may all seem rather trivial in the big picture of things, but it is important to me to treat my instrument correctly.

Any advice or info is greatly appreciated.

The stuff in bottles in the grocery store is all you need.

If in doubt, get it from a pharmacy.

It is one of the main carrier oils used in aromatherapy, and is very commonly available.

probably a health food/natural food store would carry it.

Re: Raw almond oil: where might I find it?

My wife Min Gates uses almond oil on her bodhran skin to keep it supple, works great. (Not very much, nor very often.)

She find is in natural or whole food stores. We've had no problems finding it in the US and Ireland.

To keep the oil from going rancid, it needs to be kept refrigerated, Also if you break a Vitamin E capsule into the 4-6 ounce bottle, it will be ok almost indefinetly, I got mine 5-6 years ago and it is just ready when I need it.

Re: Raw almond oil: where might I find it?

any pharmacy should stock it.

Put a small amount into each section of flute, rotate it to get good coverage and then draw a cloth through to ensure the whole inner surface is covered.

It should significantly improve tone but be careful not to put too much on too often.

Breandan - can you give any idea of what constitutes too much and too often, and what are the consequences?

I use just a little, and not often - i.e. a few drops every couple of months (ish). But I'd be interested (as I am sure others would) to know what happens if one goes wild with it, without having to find out the hard way.

Re: Raw almond oil: where might I find it?

Thank you all for your responses. I feel much more informed about almond oil. I'll look around for a supply. (Rural NH is apparently NOT the best place to find a lot of things, including almond oil.) I do happen to have a mostly empty (old) bottle of almond oil in the fridge that I haven't used, because it has a thick layer of whitish gunk in the bottom. I wouldn't want to use rancid oil. Perhaps adding Vitamin E, as suggested above, would keep this from happening. Perhaps the gunk is par-for-the-course with refridgerated organic oils and is inconsequential. I just don't know. Any thoughts? ...... now, about going wild with oil: I used to oil my flute and fifes quite heavily inside and out about once per week. I never saw any adverse effect at all. In fact, the tone, volume and tuning were all much improved. I also have had no problems with checking. That said, I now have settled into a more sustainable schedule of about once every three weeks. I still oil quite substantially inside and out and let it sit overnight before wiping it down. No ill effects so far-- only positive ones.

Thanks again, all. --- Ti
