help - amplification for a whistle

help - amplification for a whistle

our whistle player bops around when we are playing but her frenetic movements are frozen when she plays whistle because she is stuck to the microphone. - can anyone offer helpfull suggestions as to what pick ups are suitable for tin whistle etc. I have seen croft no 5 use something on their flute I think.

Yea, I was just going to say; Misha Somerville from Croft No 5...what a performer(and whistle maker).
He uses some kind of mic attached to his headpiece of his Low Whistle. I'm no techie so i'm not good at explaining; i'll leave you techies with a picture;

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

hobgoblin do a fine range of mini-microphone systems. you should check them out, they've got some good swan neck ones for whistle/flute/pipes

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

Our flute/whistle player was originally on a home-made version, but indeed there are now some good commercial ones - you usually need a pre-amp on your belt, and then have to decide if you prefer being tied to the pa by a lead, or to go for the wireless system ( another box on the belt ).
It pays to experiment a bit to get the optimum position for the mike re distance and angle to the blow-hole. Also windy outdoor gigs remain a problem.

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

Try a wireless headset mic. You'll give up the ability to fade away from the microphone, but it will allow you to change instruments, etc. very easily.

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

Our whistle player uses a K&K silver bullet microphone. it attaches to his whistle with a small peice of "super velcro" or a clip. the clip is way to big to be practical for a whistle though.
It was pretty inexpensive as well.

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

SEVERAL YEARS OF STAGE, STUDIO AND ROAD AND I'VE COME UP WITH...
THE SENNHEISER E835 MAKES A GREAT STAGE MIC FOR THE MORE ACTIVE WHISTLER WITH A MORE FORGIVING ON/OFF AXIS FEELING ABOUT IT THAN THE SM58, AND FAR MORE FORGIVING THAN THE SM57, WITH REASONABLE FEED-BACK REJECTION ON EVEN THE SMALLEST AND LOUDEST STAGES...THOUGH I DO SWEAR BY THE STAGE/ROAD TOUGH SHURE'S.

THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED SILVER BULLET, IF YOU'RE CONVINCED YOU NEED TO GO THAT ROUTE, DOES A GOOD JOB...A SIMILAR SET-UP IS USED BY RORY CAMPBELL ON THOSE LOVELY OVERTON'S HE PLAYS. WHEN PROPERLY SET, THEY DO VERY WELL ON LOWS, THOUGH I'VE NEVER FOUND A NEED TO USE THEM ON ANYTHING SMALLER THAN A LOW G...SPECIFICALLY BECUASE THE VOLUME INCREASE BETWEEN OCTAVES, OR PERHAPS THE TONAL NATURE (OF EVEN THE VERY BEST WHISTLES), CHANGES APPRECIABLY IN THE SECOND OCTAVE, AND A CLIP MIC DOES NOT ALLOW THE PERFORMER PROXIMITY CONTROL.

THE BARCUS BARRYPICKUPS ARE REALLY POOR, WITH OUR WITHOUT PREAMP, AND ALWAYS LEFT ME FRUSTRATED WITH TWO DISTINCT SOUND OPTIONS...WASHED OUT JUNK OR FEEDBACK...SPECIFICALLY THE INTERNALLY MOUNTED FLUTE MIC.

ALL THE BEST.

I guess when you're brilliant and famous you can type in all upper case.

I GUESS WHEN YOU'RE BORED AND COMFORTABLY ANONYMOUS IN CYBER REALITY YOU CAN PASS YOUR TIME DOING REALLY EFFECTUAL THINGS LIKE AIMLESSLY AND ENDLESSLY SEARCHING THREADS AND TAKING POT SHOTS AT SOME GUY WHOSE CAPS LOCK IS STUCK ON HIS BOARD...NICE WORK.

A new keyboard is only about £12.00.

yes...and a more hospitable atmosphere, devoid of inner-circle snobbery or other unnecessary b.s. is priceless.

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

just fixed it b.t.w., as it seems a matter of some concern.

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

Uh... with all due respect, Mr. farquharson whistler, if your cap-lock button is stuck -- how did you type 'fw' in lower case as your signature at the end of your post?

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

see above post

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

with the caps stuck, pushing the shift gave me the lower case...incidentally it's touch to type with the shift depressed...so i fixed it...but rest well knowing that all has been resolved and that the dastardly crime mystery has been solved.all the best. FW

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

But... your first post has the lower case at the end, and your following post is again in all uppercase claiming that your uppercase button is stuck as the reason. It obviously wasn't stuck and was working fine at the end of your first post. This doesn't add up. Any explanations?

And it doesn't really matter except that typing in all uppercase is annoying for the rest of us.

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

if it doesnt' matter drop it...
the second post i typed in caps, as i found that to be SARCASTIC...rather similar to the sarcasm afforded myself...hope this gets you up to speed, and again...all the best. FW

Re: help - amplification for a whistle

The Microphone that Mischa is using waaaay up at the top of this thread looks quite a bit like a Shure Beta 98 ( http://www.shure.com/microphones/models/beta98h.asp ) modified to utilise velcro rather than the standard clip. Personally, I err toward a SM58 and I move around quite a bit (though the fipple has to stay pretty close to the mic and within abt 130 degrees of the axis)

It's also handy to be able to pull away from the mic during loud/harsh passages. As a bonus, you'll find one on just about every stage you play.

The addition of a microphone preamp gives the SM58 quite a boost. When I can, I use a behringer mic-200 tube emulation preamp to boost the signal and warm it a bit, and a compressor to even up the levels between octaves.
