Anyone have any suggestions for tune(s) that pair well with Drowsy Maggie. If so, could you please post the tunes as well?
Thanks!

I've always liked to link this one with Toss the Feathers. Its in the tunes section in 2 keys so there isn't much point in posting it again. I find its one of those tunes that sound completely different in each of these keys, on mandolin anyway, so give them both a try. Let me know what you think.
Try playing a singles reel in G maj inside drowsy maggie. You get a great lift of key changes and you've invented a new tune.
A first part in Emin, two parts in Gmaj, then the final part of drowsy maggie in Dmaj. Then back to Emin.
Great.
Also, I love the way Matt molloy plays the lower octave D in the first part. It really growls
Like Dave our session group also uses Toss the Feathers with Drowsy Maggie although the sequence is: Drowsy Maggie, The Glass of Beer and then Toss the Feathers - they seem to go well together being all single reels with a minor feel to them. Sometimes when things are going well, the other Toss the Feathers (Key of D) is added on the end. I'll check if these tunes are on the site and will post them if not.
not a lot to do with your question but last sunday i was trying to change from a reel i can't for the life me remember now and i wanted to go into the morning dew but i came out with drowsy maggie; it's not clever, but there we go - but it might work!
How about a rare tune by the name of "Johnny's Gone to France".
I found it in the Fiddler Fake Book, and then again in the reproduced "Munster Pipers Tune Book". The fake book uses a D in one place and the pipers book uses a C, giving a very cool, modal sound. I've never heard anyone outside my circle of friends play it, nor have I seen a recording of it. A real, rare gems
Hey, I used to play Johnny's Gone to France! But the version I was taught was out of Ceol Rince na hEireann. I wonder if it's the same one. We follow Drowsy Maggie with Cooley's reel as well.
Well I agree that it goes easily into Cooley's, but 'round these parts it seems everyone eventually comes up with a set involving Drowsy + the Butterfly and Morrison's Jig. It's a bit jarring time-wise but the crowds love it.
Traditionally if jigs & reels are played in the same set, the jig (or hornpipe) goes first. I've noticed that many of these sets mentioned have tunes that are very similar to each other. Mostly minor tunes with a lot of interplay between the tonic & fifth with a triplet or roll involved. It's fine to make sets of these tunes, although it's not my cup of tea. I like more variety - I'd usually go from a D major or G tune to the E minor (or vice versa). I think Jackie Coleman's, Mtn Rd, Maid Behind the Bar etc.. would all work well.

Miss McLeod's Reel (in the key of A) works well before Drowsie Maggie (if played in Bm).

Try Around the World for Sport after Drowsy Maggie. You could knock out the final F# & D in Maggies last bar.

Re: Tune(s) to play with or follow Drowsy Maggie
I've heard this played so many times at local sessions as the second tune after Mountain Road that I never knew it was ever played with anything else!

Some people do Sleeping Maggie, but i think that's meant as a quaint "in" joke.

Hey, I like playing Drowsy Maggie followed by Tenpenny Bit, which is a fast jig.

Usually after DM we play "Kicks Just Keep Gettin Harder to Find" by Paul Revere and the Raiders. Also known simply as "Kicks".

Re: Tune(s) to play with or follow Drowsy Maggie
We'd play a slow, almost waltz-version of Hurry the Jug, then slam into DM. fun!
