Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Howdo good citizens, my Metloef bodhrán was left in The Charcoal Grill in Galway on Friday night last; 3rd March, around 2am.
It's in a deep soft black case with a woolen hat inside containing tippers. The place was packed so it's probably some not-so-decent drunk person who walked off with it.
There's a poster about it with a contact in the Charcoal Grill and the Gardaí are aware of what happened. It's sure to surface as it's worth quite a bit. If anyone spots something similiar on ebay or that, i'd greatly appreciate to be let know.

Cheers, John.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Guys,

why the smug/"smart ass retorts ? Hope you/someone retrieves your bodhran John.

Nothing lower than a thief in my estimation. Once bumped into a guy in Buncrana, All Ireland Fleadh78/79, trying to flog a Paragon banjo for 40 quid, guards were onto him in a shot.....so here's hoping some decent body will do the same for you if it show's up on the cheap.

Best of luck

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Greetings John,

I have posted this on two bodhrán discussion groups I participate in. You are welcome to contact me directly for hte information if you wish to make yourself known to the other boards. I hope the drum turns up.

Michael,

I truly hope you never find yourself in the same circumstance but if so I would hope every one rallies to your aid.

Peace,
Ed

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Am I the only one that has noticed that anything with "bodhran" in the title gets an almost immediate reply from Michael Gill? Me thinks thou does protest too much....He evidently really LOVES the bodhran or he wouldn't be so obsessed with hating it.

Michael, I'll second what Ed just posted in there. Show some respect.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

If I hear anything I'll be sure to let you know, if its any consolation I had 1 of my SOK's stolen not long ago & that was returned along with my banjo so it's possible it will be returned
Good luck!

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Classic misquote there;

Gertrude whispers the line, "the lady doth protest too much, methinks" to her son Hamlet while watching a play he has put on. She doesn't get it that the lady in the play is actually herself, and that the play has been staged to trap her. The queen in the play repeatedly goes on about how much she loves the king, and Gertrude is basically saying that if she really loved him she wouldn't go on about it so much.

People often quote the line, or paraphrase it, thinking they have caught someone out who protests so much that they must actually think the opposite.

Where as, it is the person who quotes the line who has been hoodwinked.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Isnt it 'Hate isnt the opposite of love, indifference is' so the fact that you have really really strong feelings of hate about the bodhran probably does mean youre a closet bodhran lover.

Anyhow - thats not the point at all - stealing an instrument is as low as you can get, as we well know - a)you dont make money playing this kind of music) b) every instrument is its own and a new one will never sound the same etc.

I really hope you find it John and I hope they string the beggar up by the feet.

Yep, it's all in the subtext.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

The thief's mates may beat him up once he starts to play the thing. That would be good "rough justice" too. :-)

Seriously though, I do hope John and his instrument are soon reunited.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

... and yes, hate and love do have that inextricable link. And it's precisely because I love the music so, that I hate to hear it ruined. It's those who are indifferent to the music who are indifferent to the bodhran

# Posted on March 6th 2006 by ...

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

It's precisely because I love liberty that I believe it's any fiddle/viola player's right to act like a pretentious buffoon with indifference to the misfortune of others.:-)

Michael, if you find yourself in a hole it's a good idea to stop digging.
And an apology is generally a good way to climb out.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Michael, have you been spending too much time on the Chiff and Fipple website?
I see that a few things have slipped over there, manners and tact will do nicely to start. I`m sure you didnt mean to be rude.
Did you?
:-)

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

I don't think Michael will ever apologise for his views about the bodhran. Why should he?

He probably doesn't think his humour here is particularly distasteful either, although it could be construed that way. I'm sure he'd also be delighted for John to get his bodhran back too. Then, there wouldn't be a possibility of it turning up in Edinburgh!!! :-)

Besides, John himself hasn't asked for an apology. Perhaps, he isn't quite as sensitive about Michael's humour as the rest of you. He's more important things to worry about like getting his bodhran back.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Strathfoyle - "All Ireland Fleadh78/79, trying to flog a Paragon banjo for 40 quid" - Sh*t , I was there that year. Weren't there a few Pub windows smashed on the Saturday & didn't Jim McKillop spend about 3 weeks on the stage that year?

Darn it, I never saw that dude! I'd have given him at least 50 quid for it too! :-)

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

If Gill's intent was to show off his hatred of bodhrans, his joke hit wide. Just because the bodhran was stolen doesn't mean it's out of commission; it just means it's in the hands of someone other than its rightful owner. If there were any justice in the world, Gill's session would soon find itself stuck with a bad bodhran player who's also a thief.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Ptarmigan: To get my currency correct, it was actually 40 punts back then but there was no conversion rates then so still 40 quid.....just got me thinking, that was a weeks wages ! I think he was a cheeky thief asking an exhobitant price! Cheeky beggar ! :)

I think Buncrana a few years in succession in the late 70's/ early 80's. Yeah Jim Mc Killop was one of the "gods" at that time and there was a young banjo player by the name of Cathal Hayden strutting his stuff. What ever become of him ? :)

50 quid ? Generous offer ! The Post Office was held up that weekend :)

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Aye Strathfoyle, the good old Punt. Reminds me that when I first moved to Ireland, in '69, I was earning 10 Punts a week, plus my digs!

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Gill is a typical Internet bully; very forthright on this bb, but I doubt he’s quite as brave voicing his bodhran bashing in person. It’s likely he’d need a proctologist to get the “fiddley-bits” out…

I used to find his lack of social skills and general crassness somewhat amusing, but the lack of wit or originality get tiresome quickly. I doubt he realizes that more sessions are ruined by personalities than bodhrans.

Good luck recovering your instrument.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

You have a point ToeCat. I am more of a coward in real life. I have, or at leat pretend to have, social skills. (though I of course disagree about the talking out of my arse bit)

But it is the real life coward I regret. Maybe if I was more truthful to the bodhran hater within me in real life, I wouldn't have to take it out so much on people here

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Once again, Michael Gill and Ptarmigan have managed to derail a topic with crap. Michael, the word "bodhran" doesn't apply to you, doesn't need a response from you, and if you hate it so much, ignore it!

I'm amazed at the people on this board that I meet in real life that are milk-toast individuals that all of a sudden grow a set of stones because they're behind a keyboard in a dark room while their mother is not looking.

The poor soul lost a valuable instrument. A drum made by Rob Forkner is indeed a finely crafted drum. He's obviously distressed. If you don't have anything positive to contribute, Michael or Ptarmigan, please for the rest of us, SHUT UP.

You're on every other friggin' topic here. Get a job or something. We don't need your venom and small attempts at wit.

Enough said.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Oh I see, that's nice, so I'm being stuck in the same category as Michael now. Boy o' boy will MG just be delighted with that news! As for me - Yippeee! Infamy Infamy, you've all got it Infamy

Come off it Mark, how can you have a 'discussion' about a lost or stolen Bodhran!
John has told us it's out there & I've no doubt all org-ers are on the look-out for his Bodhran in the wrong hands.
But what else can we say?
I , like everone else here, am enraged when I hear that an instrument has been stolen & I do hope he gets it back.
What do you want though?
56 postings of "Oh sorry mate, hope you get it back?"
I'm sure that'd be very productive & make for a fascinating thread!

I look on this as a conversation & if someone introduced this topic in our pub we wouldn't all sit around for three hours with long faces saying, wooaaa poor old Bodhran player.
There are only so many tears can be shed for a lost or stolen Bodhran.

Perhaps John should do what Johnny Keenan did when his Banjo was stolen out West one time.
He just made sure that all trad players passed on a vivid description + graphic details of just what he would do to the thief when he caught him.
The Banjo suddenly turned up, as if by MAGIC!

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Mark,

Excuse the pun ( not intended) but you're well off the mark re: Ptarmigan and speaking off topic.

"I" was one of the first to reply to this post, offer my sympathy and knock the "smart ass" comments.

It was "I" happened to mention Buncrana, fleadh etc. to which Ptarmigan replied. Mark, it's a natural progression in chat, whether real or cyber. No ?

I'm sure Ptar. feels John's pain/distress and would be head of the queue(that's line for American dudes) to kick the thief's ass.

Btw John, any further news ? Fingers crossed here for you bud.

Good Luck !

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Regarding Ptarmigan, point taken, Strath.

Regarding Mr. Gill....I call 'em as I see 'em.

Ptarm....Isn't that EXACTLY what John did? He posted it as to where it was, what it looked like, and where it was taken. Exactly as you described in the banjo situation. No, we don't need 56 postings of ooh, sorry, but a few saying we'll keep a look out would be great. It was never meant to be a discussion!

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Well Mark, call me an old fool (everyone else does) but I reckon, instead of trying to pick a fight with myself &/or Michael, you would have been better employed trying to find out some more detailed & useful information, in order for us all to perhaps be able to help John track down this missing Bodhran.
That is, of course, if your primary aim here is in fact to help John, & not just make a stand for your weapon of choice - the Bodhran?

For example, the relevant website would have been a useful start:
http://www.metloef.com/metloef_english/index_eng.htm

Now, as you’ll notice from this page, there are various sizes, shapes & colours, so surely a more detailed description would be very useful too,
i.e.
Diameter?
Colour?
Depth?
Any other distinguishing features?
etc.
etc.

Just a thought ...................

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

While we're on the subject, I had my triangle stolen at my last session. I'm sure nobody would have been able to get it past Australian customs so please, all Aussies, keep a look out for it. It's metal and triangular with a gap in one corner. When you hit it with its beater (I've still got that thank god) it goes "ting!"

Thanks guys.

The strange return…

An A4 poster (just a description of the bodhrán/situation with contact details) was put in the window of the Charcoal Grill ‘restaurant’ on Saturday afternoon.
A fella text me around 3am on Monday "Hello? Who's this?"
I replied with just my name / bodhrán being lost and he went on...
that he frequented the Charcoal Grill a lot (healthy man) and saw my poster about the incident. He put my number in his phone & then couldn't remember why it was there. The poster apparently jogged his memory about a pal of his telling him that he'd acquired/pinched late last week a nice bodhrán (the thief-pal was apparently in the Charcoal Grill a lot too).

I then get a text yesterday from the mystery chap telling me he has the drum in his possession and whether I’d like it handed into the Garda station or returned to the Charcoal Grill.

Charcoal Grill was fine by myself and told him as much. Get another message telling of the nasty evening being bucketed down on the town so would it be grand for it to be dropped somewhere on Dominick Street. I leg it from me homestead, down the p*ssing streets and text him back from a point with a view of Monroes pizza – asking him for it to be put behind the counter there.

Nobody was on the streets so as not to put him off I wandered back and forth past the Róisín Dubh. I then get another text saying he’d gone past there, but would turn back, no hassle. The text also said that it’d “be just as handy to f*ck it into the canal eh”. Sh!t. He’s just around the corner at the canal. Head on back past the Róisín again and stroll slowly opposite Monroes pizza door. A fella comes out in a hat, closing the door behind him. I pass by three feet away from him and go on in. Immediately ask the lads working there had there been a bodhrán dropped in. “You just missed him by a second!” tells a worker handing over the case previously known as nicked.
Head on back out into the swirling drizzle, see yer man down the end of the road, not looking back. A good man by all accounts.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Glad to hear you got your bodhrán back!

If I was you I'd look out for yer mysterious benefactor at the Charcoal Grill and feck him into the canal. He's obviously the thief. Probably did it when he was drunk.

Re: Bodhrán Lost - in Galway

Trevor, I don't know if any of these old Milliganisms will satisfy your craving, but here goes anyway:

1 - A Silly Poem:

Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
I'll draw a sketch of thee,
What kind of pencil shall I use?
2B or not 2B?

2 - Bump

Things that go 'bump' in the night
Should not really give one a fright.
It's the hole in each ear
That lets in the fear,
That, and the absence of light!

3 - True Love

I Love her in her Dressing Gown,
I love her in her Nighty,
But when the moon shines on her T*ts
Oh Jes*s Chr*st Almighty!

Good old Spike, his own brand of insanity just managed to keep the rest of us sane!

Glad to hear the good news. And the narrative of the recovery is worthy of Joyce. Reminds me of the Cyclops episode of Ulysses.

Now that there's a happy ending, I'm surprised there have been no culinary jokes about the name of the pub, either in relation to the stolen item or it's maker.
