I really enjoyed getting some swedish tunes and techniques from her last year, but I'm not sure I would want that to be the only flute tuition for the whole week. And now it may be too late to register for Burwell. Hmmm. So short answer, not sure yet!
Anyone know who's doing guitar this year? And if they're going to do the mixed instrument ensemble thing for one of the instrument workshops again? It'll be my third year - can't think of many weeks where I've had more fun and been able to remember it

single-bedroom accommodation and charming, co-operative staff. It also
has a good space for informal activities including late-night sessions,
and a licensed bar.
(N.B. Grey College also offers a number of en-suite bedrooms. These cost
a little more than the standard rooms. If you'd like to enquire about an

Church where we held the workshops.

Well, ITM isn't specifically the focus of the Folkworks Summer Schools, and any pipes you see will unsuprisingly be Northumbrian. There is a North-East of England flavouring to the songs and tunes, but all sorts of music and regions are represented.
My wife was in Durham a week past Monday,researching some of her family history. Colpitts was one of the names of an ancestor, and I knew about the "Colpitts" session, so told her to go along. No music - seems this session has been a victim of some recent legislation in England, which was discussed here and elsewhere a wee while back. This is the first time I've heard of this legislation actually killing off a traditional music session, although if it's happened in Durham, I'm sure it's happened elsewhere. Are there any other sessions listed here which have disappeared in a similar fashion ?
Let me clarify - I'm not pretending to be an expert on anything Durham-ish, being a soft southerner - I attended folkworks summer school last year and get regular emails about it.
As for sessions getting killed off, I can't remember the exact details of any, but as part of the group mailings for folkworks, we get regularly informed of pubs that have had to stop hosting bands or sessions due to this legislation. If anyone wants details I'll go back through the mails if I have time before heading off on honeymoon tomorrow
Thats a shame about the Colpitts. I was born in Durham and my dad and older brother used to go to that session. Think one of the first sessions I ever played was in the Elm Tree, wonder whats happened to it.
THe Elm Tree session is still going strong on monday nights. But if your around in durham then the place to be is the Dunn Cow on thursday nights which is a fantastic session!
There's also a decent session in the Court Inn on wednesday nights, run by Durham Univesity Folk Society during term time.
That's good to hear. I used to love the chilli con carne and chips they do in the Court Inn. Oh god, what I'd do for a nice pint of McEwan's 80 Shilling in the Queen Vic right now, and I can't - I'm stuck the other side of the world.
The session had to leave the Colpitts because of Sam Smith's brewery's policy on not licensing its premises for live music (or any type of fun). so thesession is now at the Elm Tree, not far away at all
The ElmTree session on Mondays is where some expert players from The Colpitts and occasionally Tyneside have moved on to; there's another session there on Tuesdays, also mostly ITM, where the playing is generally not as expert but it can be enjoyable enough. Some people go to both sessions. In summer, though, you stand the chance of turning up and finding no-one there - especially on Tuesdays: this session's habitues include academics, who are likely to have departed on vacations of staggering length.

Whenever I have gone to the Coalpitts in Durham or the Cumberland in Byker and tried to play Northumbrian repertoire, all they play is ITM.
Any news on Folkworks weekend yet? Is it at Hexham again or Darlington? I hear work hasn't even started at Darlington Arts Centre yet.
