Well I went last year, had a great time and was determined to go back but... I've just been mailed the tutor list, and Emma Johansson is the only flute/whistle tutor. I really enjoyed getting some swedish tunes and techniques from her last year, but I'm not sure I would want that to be the only flute tuition for the whole week. And now it may be too late to register for Burwell. Hmmm. So short answer, not sure yet!
Anyone know who's doing guitar this year? And if they're going to do the mixed instrument ensemble thing for one of the instrument workshops again? It'll be my third year - can't think of many weeks where I've had more fun and been able to remember it
Here are the full details as sent to me today (although lengthy I hope by including the whole thing it might avoid a barrage of questions. Of course, if you still have questions, I'm sure there's people here who might answer, me included. )

The Summer School brochure is now printed and should be despatched
within the next two weeks. Anyone who has attended the Summer School or
Workout Weekend within the last two years should receive a copy
automatically.
The final line-up of tutors for the Adult School is as follows:
Fiddle Pete Cooper, Clare Mann
Flute and Whistle Emma Johansson (Sweden)
English Concertina Alistair Anderson
Piano Accordion Ian Lowthian (Associate Accordion Tutor: Shona Kipling)
Melodeon (D/G) Katie Howson
Guitar Kevin Dempsey
Solo Song Janet Russell
Dance Kerry Fletcher
Group and Harmony Song Corrina Hewat
Basic Band Stewart Hardy and Anthony Robb
Northumbrian Pipes workshops will be arranged according to demand.
Karen Tweed will join Kerry Fletcher, afternoons only, to run a repeat
of last year's highly successful "Band with Dance" group.
Stewart and Anthony are once again our guest co-directors for the week!!
The administrator is Jess Roberts, and Theo Gibb will also be working
hard to help everything run smoothly.
As you probably know, this year's Adult school will be at Grey College,
which has many advantages, including some lovely teaching spaces, good
single-bedroom accommodation and charming, co-operative staff. It also
has a good space for informal activities including late-night sessions,
and a licensed bar.
(N.B. Grey College also offers a number of en-suite bedrooms. These cost
a little more than the standard rooms. If you'd like to enquire about an
en-suite room, please contact Grey College direct. http://www.dur.ac.uk/grey.college/
Tel: 0191 334 5900
The one down-side about Grey College is that they cannot allow camping
in the College grounds. We've arranged for camping to be available at
Houghall College, which is just over a mile away. Obviously we regret we
can't have camping on the same site as workshops, but this was the best
we could do! It will be a bit like the early years of the Adult Summer
School, when camping was at the Rugby club, a little way from Elvet
Church where we held the workshops.
Please note the following IMPORTANT NEWS:
We have now fixed the Summer School dates for the following four years.
The Summer School will always be the week after Sidmouth Festival, and a
week or two before Whitby Folk Week, namely:
2007 13 to 18 August
2008 11 to 16 August
2009 10 to 15 August
2010 9 to 14 August
So you can now plan your lives until 2010 !!!
We look forward to seeing many of you at this year's Summer School, and
promise you the usual mix of top-quality workshops and a great social
environment. The brochure will reach you shortly, but if you have
questions for us please email David or Sara : DO NOT reply to this
message!
The Sage Gateshead, St Mary's Square, Gateshead Quays, Gateshead, NE8

Mission: Music
Vision: The Sage Gateshead - an international home for music and
musical discovery, with local roots, a world-wide reputation, a global
programme and a fully inclusive welcome to all its users and to all
musical styles and languages.
North Music Trust is registered in England as a company limited by
guarantee, number 4044936 and as a charity, number 1087445.
Well, ITM isn't specifically the focus of the Folkworks Summer Schools, and any pipes you see will unsuprisingly be Northumbrian. There is a North-East of England flavouring to the songs and tunes, but all sorts of music and regions are represented.
My wife was in Durham a week past Monday, researching some of her family history. Colpitts was one of the names of an ancestor, and I knew about the "Colpitts" session, so told her to go along. No music - seems this session has been a victim of some recent legislation in England, which was discussed here and elsewhere a wee while back. This is the first time I've heard of this legislation actually killing off a traditional music session, although if it's happened in Durham, I'm sure it's happened elsewhere. Are there any other sessions listed here which have disappeared in a similar fashion ?
Let me clarify - I'm not pretending to be an expert on anything Durham-ish, being a soft southerner - I attended folkworks summer school last year and get regular emails about it.
As for sessions getting killed off, I can't remember the exact details of any, but as part of the group mailings for folkworks, we get regularly informed of pubs that have had to stop hosting bands or sessions due to this legislation. If anyone wants details I'll go back through the mails if I have time before heading off on honeymoon tomorrow
Thats a shame about the Colpitts. I was born in Durham and my dad and older brother used to go to that session. Think one of the first sessions I ever played was in the Elm Tree, wonder whats happened to it.
THe Elm Tree session is still going strong on monday nights. But if your around in durham then the place to be is the Dunn Cow on thursday nights which is a fantastic session!
There's also a decent session in the Court Inn on wednesday nights, run by Durham Univesity Folk Society during term time.
That's good to hear. I used to love the chilli con carne and chips they do in the Court Inn. Oh god, what I'd do for a nice pint of McEwan's 80 Shilling in the Queen Vic right now, and I can't - I'm stuck the other side of the world.
The session had to leave the Colpitts because of Sam Smith's brewery's policy on not licensing its premises for live music (or any type of fun). so thesession is now at the Elm Tree, not far away at all
The ElmTree session on Mondays is where some expert players from The Colpitts and occasionally Tyneside have moved on to; there's another session there on Tuesdays, also mostly ITM, where the playing is generally not as expert but it can be enjoyable enough. Some people go to both sessions. In summer, though, you stand the chance of turning up and finding no-one there - especially on Tuesdays: this session's habitues include academics, who are likely to have departed on vacations of staggering length.

Are you talking about East Durham or something else?

Re: DURHAM SUMMERSCHOOL 2006
I believe they're talking about the "original" Durham in North East England.

If there is a trad music summer school there, I would love a link to the website or something as I will probably be going to grad school there.

SilverSpear, If you go to the Folkworks section from The Sage's website thats where it'll presumably all be when it goes on the website.

No uilleann pipes?
I guess I'll see if I can jump that hurdle when I get to Durham and investigate applying to this for the summer of '07.

Re: DURHAM SUMMERSCHOOL 2006
Whenever I have gone to the Coalpitts in Durham or the Cumberland in Byker and tried to play Northumbrian repertoire, all they play is ITM.
Any news on Folkworks weekend yet? Is it at Hexham again or Darlington? I hear work hasn't even started at Darlington Arts Centre yet.
