Hi ,
anyone know a few places to look for a tenor banjo in Sydney?
maybe a mandolin too.
the shops are full of guitars!
second hand is cool too.
Cheers.
Aaaaaaaaarrgg! Nooooooooooo! Not another BANJO thread!
What is it about the Banjo at this time of year?
Every time you turn round here there is another thread about the Banjo!
Old footage of Tomas O'Canainn was on RTE tonight from the late 70s when he was on with Na Fili to promote his Book on ITM, in which he wrote that he believed there were three main threads to ITM:
1 – Sean Nos singing
2 – The Uilleann Pipes
3 – The Fiddle
Now there was no mention of The Banjo because you see he believed, & may well still believe, that everything else was on the periphery!
Now that I have that off my cheast humph - welcome to thesession.
Hope you find a Banjo!
For Dog's sake will somebody please find this humph a Banjo - QUICKLY!
Ptarmigan sending the banjoists on an April Fool's Outing!!
Hey Ptarmigan !! You'd better go easy on the B anjo Fraternity as you have recommended a gig for Angelina Carberry in Carlow on the 1st. of April . If they turn up in their droves a certain individual might be found staggering through the Antrim countryside with a banjo neck ( OR WORSE A POT ) dangling from his posterior regions !. THIS GIG TOOK PLACE ON 1ST. APRIL 2005 !!! Didn't you have a brief fling yourself with the dreaded one legged bodhran ( bodhyawn ? ) in the dim distant past ??!!"" Ain't nothin' more sanctomonious than a reformed whore " to quote Clint Eastwood
HANG 'EM HIGH !!
They might have a tenor or three in amongst the bluegrass and other acoustic stuff. They probably know where else you might look, too. Helpful people and pleasant to deal with.
there are always a fair few tenors on e-bay. you might have reservations about online buying, but i've never been stung dealing with this organisation. have a look and see if there's anything that interests you, then check up on the seller's record. ask any questions you like.
the other advantage of e-bay is that it gives you access to the us, where, let's face it the best banjos, excluding paragons ,were made. also, i would think that it is definitely a buyer's market as tenors are really only used in jazz and irish music, neither of which are huge in that country anymore, but there must be an awful lot of them still in circulation in the states.
to use myself as an example - about eight months ago i picked up a pre-war vega little wonder on e-bay for an all in cost of 700 australian dollars. was i happy with the purchase? totally!
Who says I'm reformed, Robin? Fraid there just ain't no cure! & anyway, what about letting humph check out your collection Robin, or did you sell them all?
Good old Carlow University (USA) Yeee Haaa! ..........
I've got a nice D'oole tenor banjo that my partner keeps telling me to sell, and I'm on the NSW Central Coast. If you'd like to try it out I could bring it along next time I'm at The Harp session one Sunday.
thanks for all the help,
Ian , Ive mailed the Hornsby guy for a list.
If you want , mail me details of yours that you may sell , I could indeed drop down to the harp some time .
cheers.
When i was in coogee in sydney, there was a music shop just up from woolworths on the cb road. I remember they'd two tenors and something like three or four 5 strings. Not sure of the quality, but you could check it out....

Re: buying a banjo in Sydney
Maybe try sending an email through this site to greenwiggle -he is a banjo player and lives in Sydney - I'm sure he'd know where to get one.

Re: buying a banjo in Sydney
Humph, you might try an MRI on old Sid, as he may have taken my suggestion on where to stick his banjo.
PS it's just a joke. After all, I play the accordion. Time flies when you play the banjo; fruit flies when I play the accordion.
