2006 Comhaltas Weekend in Chicago

2006 Comhaltas Weekend in Chicago

"Live and breathe the music for a weekend in Chicago...
"Music, Singing & Dance sessions and workshops...
"Come to Chicago for the biggest trad music blowout you will ever experience....

www.murphyroche.com

Does anyone have any opinions about this? Would it be worthwhile for a relative newbie such as myself to attend? I'm basically just interested in playing backup in sessions and doing some socializing, and there's not much opportunity to do that (the session part) where I live. I'd definitely try to hit some of the workshops, too, but I'd like to sit in on some long sessions (ie get immersed) and learn some stuff.

Any thoughts?

Re: 2006 Comhaltas Weekend in Chicago

What are you waiting for tomw, get your ass on up there that weekend.

When you arrive, be aware that there are recognised ways of doing things in any new environment - form, etiquette etc, so just be aware of how everyone else is behaving & your less likely to make a prat of yourself.

Best advice is don't just whip out your Guitar the first moment you hit your first session.
Instead, grab a pint, relax & watch what's going on.
You can learn so much about these sessions by just observing.
Do that first, cause once you whip out your instrument your focus changes to yourself & you are less aware of what's going on.

If you do that, I'm sure you'll run into lots of other musicians who will be only too keen to help you.

Have a great time - & let us know how you get on!

Re: 2006 Comhaltas Weekend in Chicago

Hey Everyone:
Thanks for all of the encouragment. My problem is more one of cowering in the corner since I don't feel like I know a lot of the tunes as well as I should and don't want to botch things up for everyone else. I checked out their web site; it looks like a lot of fun. I'm hoping that I can just get to play a lot and learn, and, like I said, just get immersed for a couple of days.

Take care, y'all.
