Is it a HORROR?

Is it a HORROR?

Do you go along with what this sign is saying?
http://www.causewaymusic.co.uk/no_harps.html

Or do you enjoy Harps in your session?

Or, what would you substitute for the Harp in the sign, at your session?

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Course, you could always invite these guys along to your session, to heat things up a bit:

Re: Is it a HORROR?

I never thought of a harp as an evil instrument to be banned from sessions. But then I'm not big on banning instruments . . . though possibly specific musicians . . . not instruments. ;-)

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Oh I don't know musicfan, I'm sure you wouldn't want a set of Slainte's Pipes at your session - staring back at you, would you?
http://www.prydein.com/pipes/etchings/devil.html

Although I agree, that particular musician could, I'm sure, prove to be a bit disruptive at any ITM session.
He'd steal all the limelight for sure!
But only if your session was a public performance, of course!

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Man I want a set of pipes like that.

I disagree with that sign, does it matter if they are evil, if no one can hear them anyway?

Re: Is it a HORROR?

"Man I want a set of pipes like that." - I think Slainte is bringing a few sets with him, next month! :-)

"I disagree with that sign, does it matter if they are evil, if no one can hear them anyway?"
Your getting very philosophical there unseen122.
It's a bit like asking - does it matter if a man is evil, if he's locked up in jail?
Surely society needs to try & put morals & manners on that man!

As for the instrument, as musicfan says, no instrument is intrinsically evil, but some players can be pure E V I L - so they need to be educated!

Examples of evil playing:
TOO LOUD
SPEEDING UP
NOODLING BETWEEN TUNES
NOODLING DURING TUNES
FARTING, OUT OF TIME, TO THE MUSIC

Re: Is it a HORROR?

We have all done atleast one of those before, I have been a culprite of the last one many times. :) There is a difference between noodling and trying to figure out a tune while it is going, which is best to do very quietly. Of course I am a Fluter, we can never be too loud it's just not possible, but I do love being the only Fluer at a session, but at the same time I love when multiple Flutes are going at the same time. I hate when people noodle between tunes. Try playing in a band where they insist on doing that, it is no fun take it from me I have experienced that first hand.

There is a Harper who comes to my usual session, I can never hear her when it really gets going, you know when somebody starts the Kesh and everybody is playing.

Re: Is it a HORROR?

A session without a harp? It's gonna be like this: http://www.prydein.com/pipes/etchings4/discord.html

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Now that looks like one hell of a session. So where can I get a set of those Pipes Ptarmigan says you have. I thought my 19 fret Banjo had a gid stretch look at that guys.

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Great image Slainte. You notice all the musicians are getting right into the music - except the whistle player, who's just getting pished!

Now how often have you seen that happen, eh?

I like the idea of the Banjo player having a bird on the end, sh*tting on the person below - a chance for us string players to get our own back on those darn slavery Flute players!
Must buy me a Budgie, today!

You notice too, that the Piper is the only one, not wearing a hat? Those guys have always got to be different from everyone else - have you noticed that?
Also, he's the only one who needs to stand on two feet - just like their music - never balanced!

:-)
Thanks Slainte, that old image really cheered me up, on this Monday morning!

Re: Is it a HORROR?

" Examples of evil playing :

Too loud
Speeding
Noodling between and during tunes
Farting out of time " (Btw totally repugnant and unacceptable, been the ruination and demise of many a good session)

But Ptamigan my good man, how could you overlook the dreaded "hogger". The guy who forever doesn't listen to others and continually insists in taking the lead before, during and after sets.

What punishment/remedies would you suggest ?

# Posted on February 20th 2006 by Strathfoyle

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Just to nit-pick for a moment Strathfoyle. I actually said SPEEDING UP & I find that a bad habit which must be almost a hanging offense, surely.

Speeding is a different beastie, cause if everyone is up for a fast session then fair enough, although don't expect me to join in!

Now, back to your question. Ah yes, the HOGGER.
"What punishment/remedies would you suggest?"

Well, a hogger isn't always the enemy.
Some hoggers are actually very welcome in my book.
I myself actually prefer to let others start the tunes on a night so I am quite happy when a good strong player, when they are a good player, with interesting sets & varied rhythms takes control.
I'm bored with my own little practiced sets & if asked to start a set these days I tend to just play the first thing that comes into my head & not worry about what to follow it with, till I get to the end of the tune! Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

If, on the other hand, you are talking about a poor player who has no right to lead a session & just spoils the night for everyone else, then I'd say it would depend what instrument they played!

Solutions, if they are a:
Piper - Fill chanter & drones with Talc
Whistle & Flute Players - Fill Flute or Whistle with Strawberry Jam
Accordion & Concertina players - Dried peas in the bellows
Fiddle Player - Honey their bow
Bodhran Player - Wet their goatskin every time they leave their seat
Banjo player - Take spanner & slacken their banjo head
Mandolin Player - Remove bridge
Spoons Player - Super Glue spoons together
Egg Shaker - Hatch it! ............sorry Hatchet or Tomahawk!

No

"Do you enjoy harps at your session?"
Yes

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Ptarmigan.......Mea culpa, I guess if I'm going to quote a body, I ought to do so verbatim. "Speeding up" , not keeping time with the rest of the session can be an annoyance but I truly believe that the majority of "culprits" know not what they do. Maybe if a large metronome was placed behind their pint they might take the hint.

"Hoggers" : My definition of the term is a player with limited repertoire and talent to match insistingly taking the lead at every given opportunity, even when the rest of the musicians are taking a break and having the craic. Now that's a hogger, a pain in the a*** !

# Posted on February 20th 2006 by Strathfoyle

Re: Is it a HORROR?

"the majority of "culprits" know not what they do." - Aye, yer right, that's the nub of the whole problem Strathfoyle! These guilty guys just don't actually LISTEN!

Re: Is it a HORROR?

In a small session harps can be great.

In a huge session it doesn't much matter, but then again, nothing does :(

I'm gonna get me an electro-harp and run it through a Marshall Stack. A little overdrive and wah-wah could only improve a session :)

# Posted on February 20th 2006 by wormdiet

Re: Is it a HORROR?

LOL wormdiet...So... would the ultimate horror be someone noodling on an electro-harp with some overdrive?

# Posted on February 20th 2006 by Mark Harmer

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Ah, well, I do think the "sign" is a joke, especially since one of the musicians on the site (Sabine Glasgow) plays the harp.

Mark, I don't know if it would be the *ultimate* horror, but noodling on an electro-harp or amplified harp with sporadic feedback would be pretty awful. However, when I need to disable or kill at ten paces or more, my choice is the massive destructive power of the Uber-Metal distortion pedal (The Harp of Cthuhlu).

This year my band's St Patrick's day gig is at a real no sh*t rock and roll venue, stacked amps and all. Turbo-charged reels and power chords, here we come! (It may not be totally trad, but the money is a very traditional green, and it will be fun.)

Re: Is it a HORROR?

I think the ultimate horror, is GHBs noodling, and lead guitarists.

# Posted on February 21st 2006 by Unseen122

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Tracie, no doubt you'll all be wearing green kilts & big green hats or perhaps looking a little like these guys?
http://www.snowcrest.net/kitty/hpages/green4.html

Not quite sure what they're doing with their right hands though?

# Posted on February 21st 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: Is it a HORROR?

The ultimate horror is me noodling. . . the instrument is irrelevant.

Right now I'm noodling on my 330 Rickenbacker, through the AC 30 patch on my processor. My neighbors couldn;t give a d@mn if it were that or the flute as long as I eventually stop.

But yeah, actually GHBs are not a noodler's friend.

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Can someone call an Exorcist to treat wormdiet?

# Posted on February 21st 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Those guys need to get a room...

I have composed stuff through noodling, but it is never as satisfying as palying a bunch of tunes. I hate musicians who think the definition of a "jam" is everybody noodling together, I really hate it when they come to sessions and noodle, not even trying to follow the tune.

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Ptarmigan - the last in your list of session transgressions is, in fact, *demanded* of jazz trombonists.

Re: Is it a HORROR?

No, Ptarmigan, that would be the audience, waiting in line for the restrooms. LOL!

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Ptarmigan, get a fecking job!!! Goddamn, I've NEVER seen such a waste of space, both literally AND physically. I can only quote Burns to sum up:

O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea's,
An' ev'n devotion.

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Heh Heh....it does seem amazing that you have sooo much time to post Ptarmigan. Do you go to sessions at all? do you have a job? If so I appreciate the way you use your time, its obviously very very effective.

Re: Is it a HORROR?

Laridee - Oooooo! .... tetchy today, aren't we?

Mind you, I had heard you were trying to give up the fags, so perhaps that's getting to you. Especially as you started soo young. This is you as a nipper, isn't it? (Real name - Dick Smith!)
http://www.causewaymusic.co.uk/smoke_damage.html

Fact is, the only thing dafter than the nonsense I often post here, is the daft eejit that actually reads it & then takes the time, effort & trouble to actually respond to it, thereby justifying it's posting in the first place!

By the way, that's a braw accent you have there, laddie.
You must be one of the Laridees from the Outer Hebrides then?

Thanks for these few words of encouragement bb. I shall frame them on my virtual wall, beside this Orange Board.
