i think it was Will who mentioned Yeats' poem the fiddler of dooney and i remembered a mate of mine asking where the fiddler of dooney competition was being held.
i looked at the net but could only find a two year old reference to it when it was in australia,i think.
i just wondered if anyone has some more up to date information about it.
thanks
I was under the impression that it has been discontinued, Dave? I know they stopped after Leo Rowsome died while adjudicating the competition in the late 90's (1995, maybe? 1996?) and then they tried reviving it, but I think they discontinued it again in 1999. Unless they've tried reviving it again?
The Fiddler of Dooney competition which was inaugurated in 1965 will be held in Sligo on Sunday 28th October 2007. There are magnificent trophies and €2,500 in prize money. Previous winners make up a veritable who' s who of the great traditional fiddle players of the past half century. Among them are names Seamus Connolly, Matt Crannitch, Cathal Hayden, Liz Keane, Paddy Glacken, Antoin Mac gabhan, Seamus McGuire, Brid Harper, Manus McGuire, Kathleen Collins, Gerry Forde, Brenda McCann, Enda McNamara etc.

Re: fiddler of dooney competition
What about Clare's Tara Breen then, probably one of the youngest ever winners!
