Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

OK, might as well chime in.
For a list of flute players on WFO1, 2 & 3, go to, respectively:
http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO_CD.htm
http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO2_CD.htm
http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO3_CD.htm

Try to avoid duplication. I might try to get some fill-ins to complete WFO3.

I'll start off a wishlist:

Brendan Carson [Co. Down]
James Carty [London]
Jamie Hamilton [Boston]
Kevin Ryan [Ennis]
Breandan O'Hare & Marie Rafferty (duet) [Belfast]

Kevin Krell

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Peadar O'Loughlin is only playing fiddle these days, at least at a level he's happy with. Unfortunately the flute track he liked is being used by CCE for an upcoming CD, so not available to me. If anyone can identify a duet he did with Seamus Connolly for RTE, I might be able to request that from their librarian (but needs details).

I was considering asking Carmel Gunning, but her CD pretty much is whistle, so I haven't actually heard her flute playing.

Ben Stephenson didn't answer my emails, yet backed Dan Gordon on guitar for WFO2.

A few others might not be available due to 1) their lack of interest in this sort of project; 2) recordings are tied to a record label which won't allow use; 3) Can't find 'em. or not interested in being put in a studio.

Tell me more about the London players above (although I'm familiar with John Blake, who I think is in Dublin now).

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Sheena's from Armagh and is a powerful, lyrical flute player. I know many people enjoy her style. She's a member of the well-known Vallely family.
Contact me if you ned an email address/phone number for her.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Kevin, Carmel Gunning does play flute and there's one flute track on her new album "The Sligo Maid." She was actually planning to include several flute tracks but did just one because of a bad cold during the recording.

I think I know Sheena Vallely. I'm going to visit London next month and look forward to seeing her again.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Unfortunately P.J. Crotty died a year or two ago. So if you wish to include him on WFO 4 it would need to be an archival recording of some sort. But go for it, 'cause it would be nice to hear more from him. I loved the CD he did with James and Carol Cullinan, called "Happy to Meet".

Hi, Conan. You know I was in Porterhouse while you were away in Milltown. I will be in London around St. Paddy Week. Hope I can meet you and Danny.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

What about Paul O shaughnessy on the flute this time instead of the fiddle, He`s a great flute player and I would nearly go so far as to say I prefer his flute playing to his fiddle playing.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

I think I reember someone mentioning that Slainte. Glad to hear you'll be over - we need more flutes!

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

I'll second James Carty - heard for the first time in a session recently and was quite taken with his playing.

Still a keen advocate of Canadian Nicholas Williams. His style is very different to most traditional Irish fluters, but he's still an excellent player of the wooden flute.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

??
There is some great playing on WFO II

Emer Mayock, Justin Murphy, Desi W, Michael Tubridy are "over-egging the pudding?"

# Posted on February 3rd 2006 by wormdiet

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, who is also the new singer of Danu, her Flute playing is often over looked of course when Doorley is most of the Flute there is a good reason to be.

# Posted on February 3rd 2006 by Unseen122

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

But we wooden flute players *like* eggy pudding. The eggier the better. In fact we're *obsessed* with eggy pudding. Bring on the eggs!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm eggs...

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Hahaha, Geoff Wallis's comment made my day. I can't think of anything funnier than a music critic (and one who boasts about his online inventory of Irish trad cds) suggesting that we already have one too many WFO compilations. LOL (wiping tears from my eyes)

To Kevin Krell: PLEASE keep producing these absolutely wonderful cds. WFO I and II are among my favorite music cds of all time and genres. I can't wait till III is in my hot little hands. Your good work is appreciated more than you can possibly realize!

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Oh, and let me suggest:

Cathal McConnell
Patrick Olwell
Marcus O'Murchu
Clodach Nic Ruairi
Cait Reed

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Oh, and Mary Rafferty (Mike's daughter, more widely known for her button box playing, but also a wonderful fluter)

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Hey do you know who's a great flute player? Oul' Long Note! :¬)
Anyone else gonna help me out him?

# Posted on February 4th 2006 by Conán McDonnell

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Let me catch up on a couple of comments.

Geoff: You'll like WFO3 even less, guaranteed. Sorry, but apparently just not your thing. You probably don't drool over lined keyways, either. But everyone else has been egging me on. And hey, it is 18 months or so between volumes.

Will: Cathal McConnell & Marcus O'Murchu on WFO1. Pat Olwell slipped away from the headlights (same for Sam Murray BTW). Cait Reed mostly played fiddle here, and she's now moved away.

rachrach: Alan Doherty is on WFO3.

hossboss: Gregory Daly & Harry McGowan on WFO2.

john watson: Tom McElvogue on WFO2.

breandan: Seamus McKibbin - got a phone #? Davy Maguire suggested him.

Mary Nugent (Dublin) - could use contact info. Same for Gerry Callaghan, & Gerry O'Donnell (Bray) & Paul O Shaughnessy. How about Phelim O Raghallaigh (Meath), Francis O'Connor (Limerick)?

Unseen 122: Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh did not respond, but then I doubt Danu ever reads their website mail.

I've heard Tom Oakes.

snorre: Contact info for those players, please. I think Michael Bonamy has moved? Same for the rest of you - any help getting in touch with players makes it all the more likely.

Thanks for the feedback, folks - keep it coming.

To hell with the begrudgers.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

I think Danu are just getting back from India. If I meet them after I see them next month I will pass the word on to Muireann to check the email.

Jose Hevia is better known for his Asturian Piping but is also a great Flute player. Try reaching him throught ARHPA website.

John Blake formerly with Teada, Guitar and Flute. Best bet is to ask the current lineup of Teada how to get in touch with him, I see Damien is on WFO2 so that might not be too hard for you.

# Posted on February 4th 2006 by Unseen122

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

That second sentence in the second line should read "Try reaching him through the ARHPA website."

# Posted on February 4th 2006 by Unseen122

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Oops, yes I see I missed Cathal and Marcus on WFO1.

Cait's in Golden CO, and she has a nice East Galway touch to the flute. PM me if you want her contact info.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

How about Ivan Goff? He's powerful on both pipes and flute. Last I saw him in concert, the pipes were great, but I could've listened to an hour more of just flute.

And I second Conán's nomination of LongNote!

# Posted on February 4th 2006 by Will CPT

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Hey, a search on LongNote found me more about the tune "Swing Swang", which Paddy O'Neill plays on WFO3. He got it from Mick Hoy.

It seems Conal Ó Gráda hasn't appeared yet.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

I 'DON'T BELIEVE IT!

# Posted on February 4th 2006 by Ptarmigan

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Conal Ó Gráda has been working on his own projects and at last contact wasn't available. He had given his permission for earlier recordings (from his solo CD and with Colm Murphy) but the label refused. Please remember that DONATING a track to a non-profit venture surely can't be a mandatory requirement (perhaps even more so from a commercial label). It's only by the grace and generosity of the musicians that it happens at all. And you can see that there has definitely been an extremely generous nature revealed by the participants.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

I would like to suggest Dougal Adams (West Australia) . Ben Stephenson did some of the backing on his CD "The Good Ear".
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/adamswaters
http://members.iinet.net.au/~thegoodear/
If you are interested in Dougal and he does not answr his email then drop me an email and I could telephone him - not sure how good he is about his emails.

# Posted on February 5th 2006 by Donough

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

I forgot about Dougal Adams. It's quite a nice CD - all duets w/concertina. He agrees there should have been some solos. I found the backing was a little overpowering, though.

# Posted on February 5th 2006 by kkrell

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Patsy Moloney from Birmingham is a lovely flute player - credited by Kevin Crawford as being a big influence. I don't know if he has ever recorded anything - but he might be persuaded to........

# Posted on February 5th 2006 by madmike1

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Just send Dougal back into the studio and tell him to to do it solo :)

# Posted on February 6th 2006 by Donough

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Maybe so.

# Posted on February 6th 2006 by kkrell

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

How about Chris Layer, NYC.
Carmel Gunning is a fine flute player--she played mostly flute (a Wilkes, no less) at session I attended in Co. Sligo.

# Posted on February 7th 2006 by Tintin

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

So far, I've added Aoife Granville to WFO3, and have emailed Carmel Gunning. I'll get onto the other for WFO4. Thanks. Keep 'em coming if you can.

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Ben Stephenson absolutley - He never ever checks his email though - If I need to tell him something I have to email his girlfriend....sigh....

Re: Suggestions for Wooden Flute Obsession volume 4.

Carmel Gunning is coming to Perth (WA) in a couple of weeks. Maybe you could get Dougal and Carmel to do a duet while she is here :) .

Ben Stephenson!!!! (I thought he backed Elaine Jeffreys?)
Aran Olwell!!!

Hi Emily - Aren't you paying attention? Haven't you heard Nic's track for WFO3 (backed by Jimmy and Joey)?

http://www.worldtrad.org/MP3/WFO3/Nicolas_Buckmelter.mp3

Last week he played some tasty duets with Shannon Heaton at her concert in Altadena.
