Seeking good sessions, concerts and festivals in Ireland - Oct 2-16

Hey all -
I'll be in Ireland (centered in Dublin) from the 2-16 of October. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for sessions, concerts and festivals during that time, in Dublin especially but really anywhere in Ireland.
I'm looking for the real deal of course - the less touristy/commercial, the better.
Best,
Chris

Chris,

The Derrygonley Festival takes place over the weekend 11th October. Generally it is a very good event. One of the main concerts this year features Laurence Nugent with Fintan McManus and Pat McManus which should be something special if you are a flute/new tunes enthusiast

Chris
I'm a regular visitor to Dublin and I'll be there 25th Sept until 2nd Oct.so we will just miss each other ,which is a pity because it would've been good to meet a fellow sessioneer. However I recommened the "Cobblestone" at Smithfield Market or "Hughes"
at Chancery Street both on the north side of the city.Sessions start around 10 pm every night. For a full session listing you can buy a copy of "Irish Music Magazine" from any good newsagents.
All the best
Alan

I would concur with what has been said above - Derrygonnelly is an absolutely superb wee festival and well worth a visit. Usually has about 60 invited musicians supplemented with another 40 or 50 to make up some great sessions in the village.

I have also made the trip down to the Cobblestone and there are about four sessions over the course of the day. the first starts about 1 in the afternoon and the last finishes at 1 in the morning.

If you fancy coming North of the Border there is a great wee session on the first friday of the month in the Maghera Inn in County Down.

Also music in Belfast in several venues - e.g. Kitchen Bar, Hercules, Madden's, John Hewitt.

... around the Corner from Hughes's, down towards the river is the "Chancery" which has great musicans playing most nights. Even if you might play it is well worth a visit to watch the likes of Peter Browne, Harry Bradley & Shane McGowan (no not that one).

BTW for after hours check out the residence bar of the Harcourt Hotel on Fridays and Saturdays. There are sessions there on those days and many Dublin sessioneers go there after their gigs. You might see many familiar faces on those nights.
There can but do not have to be good sessions till 4 in the morning!
