I was just looking up the Willie Clancy Week web site where they state that:
"The fee is €120 Euro, £100 Sterling or $180 US payable by cash or cheque to Muiris Ó Rócháin or Harry Hughes, Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, Miltown Malbay."
Now, you can buy €120 Euros for about £80 Sterling or $145 US, so the moral is: make sure you pay in Euros. After all, the difference weighs in at about 8 pints of guinness which could keep you going for at least one night there.
You have to pay the bank to change money and the exchange rate varies by the day so setting the fee now might even mean a loss in July. Just a wild guess of course but i don't think theres a try on or a rip off. If it bothers you pay in Euros at the time.

Maybe it's a nationality tax, hoping to reduce the hordes of "furriners."

Go to the post office - no commission charged = more beer.
