As a relative newcomer to the 'session', I would like to know which particular threads (not topics) should rate as the best - not necessarily the most replies. What makes a good thread can be very subjective, i suppose...
The best are when the those who obviosly know what their talking about start discussing/debating/arguing over technique.
There are many, but I think Michael and Wills dicussions are always interesting, as are Dow's when he's talking about rhythm. There's many more, but I think it's nearly always better
when they don't agree - makes you try a understand what their point is, you can learn a lot.
I once started a thread on which concertina I should take up (this was before I discover playing Flute). The aregument between the players went on for probably 150 posts, it was great.
When you say "threads not topics", do you mean you want the actual thread/discussion number/link.
Personally I enjoy some threads though I would not consider taking part whereas others I may take part in but enjoy less. The occasional one fulfils both criteria.
The more personal threads are often fun if you know the people involved, even if it is not very informative and may not even make sense to some readers.
I like the ones where everyone is more or less at 99.9% agreement, but we still knock chunks out of each other while splitting hairs over the remaining 0.1%
Crikey Conan - Lord of the Flies - imagine the denizens of theSession being stuck together on a desert island, with no grown ups!
I foresee:
1) Splitting into the Anglo vs English factions.
2) Throwing PA's over the cliff.
3) Jungle telegraph - passing on messages through the jungle by bodhran.
4) Getting the glasses off the fat one, so you could set fire to ---------- (insert instrument of choice here).
5) Having no jungle telegraph after item 4.
One of the best discussions I have seen recently was embedded in the Comments section on the tune Road to Lisdoonvarna. A very enlightening discussion on the differences between jigs, single jigs, slides, etc. And some members have turned their personal pages into little music lessons and discussions of session etiquette etc. This website is full of nice little "easter egg" surprises like that--not all the good discussions are on the discussions tab!
Must admit I like those rambling discussions which hit a number of different topics en route, with some heated arguments, amusing anecdotes and informative discussions on the way.
You know, those ones that seem to last for a few days and you keep popping back to see who is getting at who, or calling who, what, or inventing another ultimate put down, or loosing their rag altogether!
I just love it when a thread is hijacked.
Which reminds me, did I ever tell you about ................

Re: favorite discussions
Well if we get 1000 posts on this topic, it's likely that yours will be the only one that expresses that particular opinion.
I think there should be an honorary thesession crankhandle that can be bestowed for winding people up. A bit like the conch in Lord of the Flies...

hehehehe that sounds about right Michael.
Briliant Dave! All a bit scary. So Is Jeremy Ralph? Is Jack Jack?
And who, or what, is "the beast"?

Lord of the Flies was far and away my favourite Michael Flatley show....

Re: favorite discussions
Wasn't Lord of the Flies that eccentric Scot who spent his days examining fruit fly toenails with an electron microscope or some such thing?

Re: favorite discussions
I thought the Lord of the Flies was some sort of Zipper repair expert!

Re: favorite discussions
Those were the days Michael, but I got bored.
I must confess all this theory nonsense does not interest me, hardly surprising, and I do tend to pick the spicier discussions.
You notice the recent "tunable bodhran" one didn't even tempt me.

Any thread where we can get some mileage out of bodhran or banjo quips.
