I've heard from someone that Bohola, at least in its current form, is no more. Something along the lines of the fiddle player leaving. anyone know anyone in the know about this? I did rather like a fair amount of their music, more so than the musicians themselves.
We caught their last show with Sean Cleland. They have promised that Bohola will go on, without Sean Cleland. Which sucks, because the three just jell onstage... they were phenomenal.
Ah, lovely, so Boholoa will carry on. I saw them at the catskills a few months ago, and they sounded good together. kinda funny how I have to travel to new york to see them when they're based in my home town.
Careful there PUTF... When I first met Sean he said, "I've been enjoying your posts on thesession.org." I didn't know he was paying attention to this website. Maybe you don't think so now?
Life on the road has got to be tough. I feel lucky I had a chance to hear them though; it was unforgettable. Any insider news of who might be filling Mr. Cleland's chin rest?
My girlfriend, who posts on this forum as Frances McGabhan, wanted me to share this with you:
PUTF, aw, as my mother would say "hate is such an UGLY word", are you sure you want to say that in a public forum with no explanation?
Sean is a great fiddler, has done a LOT for continuing the tradition of Irish music in Chicago and continues to set an example as to how to respect one's musical elders. He does a stellar job in teaching young people how to learn the music by ear and share the music with each other!
He is also a nice person, maybe you should think about that before you say how much you "hate" him..
Unquote.
To which I add:
Sean is a gent.
His connection to musicians of previous generations was a vital part of his musical education, as it should be with any successful traditional musician. It helped to make him a complete irish fiddler, and he wants to make sure that the aural transmission of music from one generation to the next continues. Such an undertaking requires diplomacy, patience, generosity of spirit, knowledge, and lots of elbow grease. Not a job for a “jerk” by any means.
See his website, www.irishmusicschool.com.
I’ve been observing his interactions with his students, with peers, and with the older generation of musicians for years…He’s honest, he has strong but very well-founded opinions based on 30+ years of experience, including personal dealings with just about everyone who is or was active on the Chicago scene since about 1970, but “jerk” is definitely not applicable in his case. Don’t mistake his passion, honesty, personal integrity, loyalty to friends, self-respect, and genuine love for Chicago irish music tradition for something else.
Thanks... I agree. I enjoyed meeting Sean when he came to SF with Bohola. I guess I'll have to go to Chicago to meet up with him now unless he resurfaces in another touring group.
Well...there may well be other opportunities for him to turn up in the Bay area. He's just done with living out of a suitcase for half a year at a time.
i rarely use the word HATE as well, but in this case it is well deserved. to keep his "virtue" intact, i will not disclose why i have such strong feeligs against him.
only until recently has he been truely involved with the irish community. is his school a good idea? absolutely. he has a great nack with the kids and its great to see more and more kids play irish music. and i know he's been giving private lessons for what seems like forever. he's come a long way from what he used to be. and i'm saying that in the nicest way possible. this is from personal experience.
i can only imagine that i must be the only person in the world who has a dislike of sean. he may have changed in the past couple of years, but i still can't shake my impression of him.
sorry.
i do hope his kids do well though. as well as for the other irish music schools in the chicago area. i'm always a huge fan of keeping the irish music tradition alive.
PUTF: Where do I start with your post? Ok, you are entitled to dislike anyone you want to for whatever reasons you choose.
However, what surprises me is that you state that he has "only until recently has he been truely (sic) involved with the irish community".
Recently?
Which Irish community do you mean? He has certainly played Irish music since the early 1970s, has been playing Irish gigs and doing private lessons for most of that time, has been in close contact with the older generation of Irish musicians since childhood?
Have you been playing in public sessions in the last 15 or so years? Do you ever venture out to play with older immigrant musicians on the north or south sides of Chicago? I wonder why we never see you out playing with the Irish community, maybe you would bump into Sean or the other students?
ah no, go on, let's all take guesses as to who you are!
Would you answer him anyway if he had gotten it right?
I have a better idea, why don't you answer as what you mean by "recently" as regards Mr. Cleland instead?
Then we can discuss your qualifications and your many years playing with the older players and learning their tunes and experience with ITM............. or not as the case may be.
I was very shocked and disappointed about the slanderous comments from PUTF about Sean Cleland. I think she should re-think her ideas of virtue and have a closer look about her. Ms. Colette Byrne might then change her tune to put down the fiddle, instead of picking up the fiddle. I think PUTF is missing the whole picture of what Sean is trying to accomplish in Irish music, especially in the Chicago area. Anyone who has been around the music community; whether it is a parent who has their children in his classes, or another fellow musician who plays Irish music, will know Sean Cleland has made a great contribution to Irish music.
What's good? It's your boy Garry....I haven't been here in awhile and I'm not here to talk about hip hop.....I'm here for one person and she knows who she is.....We were once part of the same family....So hiding won't work with me....I know your hatin' style....you did it to me before on this site....I let it slide....cause let's face it...You and Kati are small potatoes.....But now this isn't about me, believe it or not it's about someone who's always shown everyone, yes even me, the respect they deserved......
Colette, you woke the beast up by hatin' on Sean..... I've known Sean for as long as I've been in Irish music and he has always been honest, courageous, and truly willing to stand by his beliefs and what he says......... Everything can't be seen through the eyes of the Academy...if what you want is to preserve the music and the tradition and pass it on to a younger generation with as much potency as possible, Sean has met that demand 100 times over.
I want to challenge you Colette, to give examples of why YOU "hate" Sean..... I'm not saying that your experiences haven't happened and they don't matter.....but it really looks obvious to everyone who knows anything about Chi-town that the only reason you're on here puttin' Sean on blast is because your head has been filled with someone else's bullsh*t. I think all you have is second-hand information.
I'm not invalidating how you feel about Sean......you've done that yourself...... What did you think was going to happen if you went out in public talking that kind of bull-ish? The Academy is a very small, sad bubble and outside of it is a world that thrives..... Sean wants his school to be different and teach the kids to live in that world and experience all it has to offer.... If you would stand in the way of that.....which you're doing by exhibiting this behavior, then your true intentions for being in Irish music need to be questioned.
Interesting posting GRY (or is it GRWHY now) - it's been a while since we heard from you.
Isn't this about some basic Netiquette. Just don't bad-mouth someone indescriminately on a forum especially if you do not wish to back it up.
There are one or two people in the world that I am less than enamoured with. Maybe part of that is me having a problem with them and I am not going to embarass myself by saying who they are. If other people all felt the same way about those people then I don't need to say anything anyway, because pretty soon that person will get the message.
If it's private then keep it private.
It's amazing how web threads mirror real life - someone posts a topic and then the thing goes off on a complete tangent. I have never met Sean Cleland but I do know Pat Broaders who is still in bohola (with a small b), and I think the plan is for himself and Jimmy to continue as a duo for the moment.
They've had a few ups and downs with the lineup as they also has a female singer/guitarist who didn't stay too long. I would hope that they find somone (or two) with whom they can discover the same level of emphath and intensity that they enjoyed with Sean.
And for the record it is very uncool to use such emotive language as "hate" about a fellow musician on a forum such as this.
