Musical influences

Musical influences

I was thinking the other day about all the random musicians I have met that have made all the difference in my life. None of these musicians will probably ever be famous or anything of that sort, but they're musicians all the same. Besides, thats not important, because they made more of a difference to me than tommy peoples or martin hayes ever will. After all people are people and more often than not the ones we remember and cherish are the ones close to home. I was hoping others would share stories and tell some of the lessons they have learned.

Re: Musical influences

Might want to read some of the stories at http://thesession.org/discussions/display.php/8941, Anna. Not all of the influences there are famous or even well known.

Re: Musical influences

My mentor is also the director of the music club I belong to. She has touched my life and my playing (playing music is my life anyway) in ways I never thought possible. always opening vast opportunities for me. Putting a faltering young musician's steps into the professionals' world and helping me succeed. And nnot just with me! She passes on her art of teaching and playing with such skill as to train champions to train champions to train champions. Perhaps never in this world to have"The Great" with her name, but undoubtably deserving of it. She is my role model in every aspect.

Re: Musical influences

From my youth - Planxty, Bothy, Boys of the Lough, High Level Ranters, Jimmy Shand (dare I admit that?).

Recently - Kitty Hayes, Mary Macnamara, Chris Droney and Tim Collins. Guess which instrument I am playing lately?

Re: Musical influences

My biggest influences? That's easy...

John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

Every time I hear "I Saw Her Standing There", I'm 13 years old again.

Re: Musical influences

Banana, I can definitely relate to what you've said. Early on, sure, it was the prominent musicians and groups -- Chieftans, Planxty, Steeleye Span, etc. -- who inspired and influenced me. But the last few years, when I've been become active musically again after a lengthy period of dormancy, it's the people I've encountered regularly at sessions or house parties who have definitely had the more profound impact on me and my playing. Some of these people are full-time, professional musicians with CDs to their credit -- but not necessarily world-famous yet -- but plenty others are just workin' stiffs like me. Not to sound too precious here, but it's helped bring the music closer to me.

Re: Musical influences

I completely agree. I came to traditional music having played classical for many years.

I have enormous respect for the musicians I met at sessions who tolerated my early mistakes and helped me find my musical style. Of course I have listened to the great players as well but ultimately it is the carrying stream of the tradition that takes us all forward.
