has anyone had a wooden flute repaired by matthias at topwind in london? is he any good? i think mine only needs the joints re-corking and the keys sorting out, but i want it doing well.
It's only a sideways answer, but I do know another of the staff, because he plays ITM, on a wooden flute, very well. I'd be surprised if they're rubbish, just on that account. And I know HIM on account of a referrence from the flautist in my band, who is not to be sniffed at, and uses them regularly.
How's the course going ? Been out to the Mill Reef yet ?
hi pete.
the course is going ok thanks. i did fail the first MCQ, but i wasnt the only one. 2nd term is much more interesting than the 1st. and we start dissections soon. Mill Reef?
I have no idea where you live, but I have had recent experience with a Jon Cornia @ Cochran Flutes in California who is definitely worth contacting. I had an absolutely WORTHLESS 100+-year old flute---it was an Eb 8-key that sounded okay in the low register but was all over the place and hopelessly out of tune in the second octave. I had purchased it dirt-cheap from a woman who had gotten it in England some 25 years ago and kept it in her closet ever since; I bought it mainly to see if there was any chance of making it playable again, but had no expectations of having it ever be anything more than a very pedestrian instrument. Jon looked it over, and did what he felt it needed: aside from re-padding it and sealing a couple of very small incipient cracks, he re-bored the thing and made a new headjoint for it. The result? It now plays WONDERFULLY in tune, and has a rich warm tone that belies its small-holed R&R-style pattern. This old ugly duckling has turned into a true swan, and I think that Jon has the makings of a really gifted repair man. Contact him @ cochranflutes@Gmail.com.

Re: flute repairs
I was thinking of taking my wooden flute to all flutes plus - it needs a serious overhaul, I think. Any experience of them?
