Brian Rooney's "The Godfather" - superb fiddler from Leitrim via London. He has a great feel to his music and some very subtle variations. I commend it to the house.
I got it after Christmas, but the new album by Winifred Horan and Mick McAuley, Serenade, is a nice effort. More traditionally oriented than the last couple of Solas outings, which is fine by me. The bulk of the rhythm is provided by Donal Clancy, a not frequently mentioned, but marvelous guitar accompanist. Good stuff.
Donal Clancy is one of my favorite backers. I first heard him at the 1999 Washington DC Irish fest, where he played with at least three different acts, including the heavily fused Eileen Ivers band and solidly traditional Mike and Mary Rafferty. Donal sounds great in any setting. You can also hear his work on The Old Fireside Music, The Road from Ballinakill, and Speed 78, all Mike Rafferty albums.
Hidden Fermanagh Volumes I and II along with the book - with the tunes lovingly transcribed by our very own sharontheflute.
These are crackin tunes that were only played in the Lake District of Ireland for many years and the collection includes tunes with a pedigree going back over 200 years.

What was your favourite cd you got this Xmas? I got one by Marty Meehan. There are some lovely tunes on it and the playing is perfect.

Re: What was the best cd in your Xmas sock?
It has to have been 'Notes from the Heart' by The Mulcahy Family. I picked up five trad CDs over Christmas but this pure drop gem is just stunning.
