Leo Ginley, Belfast Fiddler.

Leo Ginley, Belfast Fiddler.

I am still trying to collect any information about my late father, Leo Ginley, Fiddler from Belfast, who played everything from Mozart to the Masons Apron. He was very well known in the 1930's , 40's 50's. He broadcast many times on Radio Eireann, BBC, UTV, Telefis Eireaen, etc.

I would love to get any professional recordings of him, as I have nothing of the sort to remember him by. I do have some awful recordings which sound like they were made with a hammer and chisel. Maybe someone can unearth an old archive copy of some of his work perhaps even taken off air on a decent reel to reel recorder.

Any contributions?

Some session members have contacted me months ago re this matter and for that I am very grateful.

I might try and get a link to a picture of him into this discussion at a later date.
Thanks in advance,
Leo Ginley (Jr)

Re: Leo Ginley, Belfast Fiddler.

I have some manuscript pages(about30) photocopied in 1978 from an original which as far as I know was your fathers. If you contact the site moderator he can give you my email address and I will try to arrange to scan these and send them to you.

Re: Leo Ginley, Belfast Fiddler.

Have you tried contacting any of the radio stations you mention, or any presenting organizations for which he might have performed, and inquired whether they have master tapes in their archives? Perhaps for a small fee you might be able to obtain copies. Or perhaps based on your wit and charm and folks' loving recollections of your father, it won't cost you a penny. Your local library and newspaper might be sourcesof information, too.

Without knowing how accommodating the folks at these organizations might be, I'd also like to suggest that you consider pulling together materials into some kind of format that might be useful to historians or students of the music: a documentary or some such, maybe with assistance from a local college class? a story for the local television or radio station? Could you get a grant to fund your project? The more official it seems, the more cooperative people are likely to be.

Maybe these schemes are too grand and convoluted for your needs, but what the heck? I'm a journalist, and in my experience, you can ask people for the most ridiculous assistance and get amazing results. Doesn't hurt to try, or at least consider it.

And don't forget to count your good fortune to have had such a talented, versatile, memorable father.

Best,
Carol

Re: Leo Ginley, Belfast Fiddler.

Hi Leo. I've discovered some information on your father. I'm researching 'the history of music and broadcasting in Northern Ireland 1924-1940'. I've been looking through files at BBC's Written Archives Centre and found a file on your father which gives contracts of broadcasts between 1936 and 1943. I don't know if any of these were recorded, but with actual dates, you could contact the BBC sound archives and see if they have any recordings.

If you contact me at: rstanley02@qub.ac.uk I can send you an attachment giving you more details of these contracts.

Regards, Ruth
